Operator Please with Little Red & Flamingo Crash
The Gov, 5 April 2008
I'd been eagerly awaiting this gig, considering I missed seeing Operator Please on their last tour last year for the lamest of reasons.
So I went along with pretty high expectations.
The support bands (Flamingo Crash & Little Red) weren't anything special, which was a pity. But when Operator Please hit the stage, they brought the room alive. They played pretty much all of their songs, and all with great professionalism - with hardly a break between songs, the entire performance was over before 11pm. Well I guess the kiddies needed to get home to bed (all ages gig) but it did seem somewhat rushed, even though it didn't feel like anything was missing.

Considering that gig finished so early, my friend SS suggested we head to the Grace Emily, where a friend of a friend was in a band there...
Tin Pan Orange
Grace Emily, 5 April 2008
Well, the first band on when we arrived was Matt Macbeth (whom SS's friend's friend is in) - they're from Sydney, and although the music style and guitar playing was pretty adept, Matt's voice was enough off kilter to make his singing not enjoyable. We'd missed this band's support acts (including Princess one point five) so I thought it'd be a short night once they'd finished their set.
However, the next band came on - Tin Pan Orange. I'd never heard of them, but as soon as they started playing, I was awestruck. These guys are folk-y, and after a while I realised they reminded me a little of The Waifs, which is a good thing. They played for a good hour, and it was good enough that I've bought their CDs. I'll definitely need to keep an ear out for them again. Their guitarist/violinst is absolutely amazing at instruments, his long solos on any instrument got waves of well-deserved applause.
