Ratatouille

Pixar has done it again. Once again, they prove themselves to be at the forefront of CG animated movies, and it usually comes down to one thing - good writing. Things have come a long way since 'Toy Story' and most of us aren't all that impressed with how good animation is getting, we just want to watch an entertaining movie. And Pixar still manages to do that well.

From the pre-movie short 'Lifted' to the main feature itself, the high quality of the animation can't be faulted. Ratatouille, once again, has a fairly simple plot (Rat becomes a chef in a French restaurant kitchen with a human 'puppet') and has the same basic message as all previous Pixar films (family and friends are valuable), but the characters are endearing and there's plenty of humour, which in this case is mostly visual or human-condition based, rather than one-liners or pop culture references, which franchises such as 'Shrek' seem to rely on.

Director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) has managed to make this film flow incredibly well, with plenty of great action set pieces of Remy the rat racing around the kitchen, and both the rat and human characters are sympathetic and well drawn out. Even the villains aren't all that heartless, and we can see their point of view as well as our heroes.

This Pixar film is better than their last one, Cars, (in my opinion), but then again, it is certainly not aimed at the pre-school crowd like Cars was (PG rating which I reckon is for the use of alcohol and firearms) and I find it far easier to identify with anthropomorphised animals than vehicles...

9/10
