Black Sheep
An expedition down to Mitcham this week...
So what's Black Sheep? A New Zealand Horror/Comedy about man-eating sheep. That's pretty much it. It's hilarious!
A lot of the horror movie cliches are followed, but done in a whimsical NZ Sheep-farming manner. The gore is pretty gory (thanks to creature effects by WETA), and the fourth wall is never broken, but the ridiculousness of sheep-monsters as well as some well timed, flatly delivered jokes just makes this great. They don't waste time with too much plot setup before getting right into the sheepkiller action, and then it gets huge quickly.... and this is probably one of the few horror films where the terror attacks in the daytime. There's very little of the film set at night!
It might be ridiculous, but it still takes itself seriously and doesn't break the fourth wall. The characters are believable if somewhat two dimensional and cliche, but it's got charm, and guts (literally) and mutant killer human-sheep hybrids. So what's not to like?
