Die Hard 4.0
Yet another movie title change for no apparent reason... the US release is called "Live Free or Die Hard", and yes, it's a fairly US-centric title, but then again, the plot has a lot to do with US patriotism and fearmongering to some extent too...
John McClane is back for yet another terrorist-escaping filled action flick, after a very long hiatus. To be honest, I've only seen the first Die Hard film (with Alan Rickman as Hans Gruber) so I can't pass comment on 2 or 3 so much.
But 4.0? Well it's pretty damn exactly what you'd expect from Die Hard. Lots of amazing stunts, guns, explosions, crashes, and Bruce Willis being the action hero he's pretty much played in almost every movie since the original Die Hard. In other words, it's awesome. The plot is reasonably consistent and follows nicely, even if there's some holes in the reality when it comes to what computers can actually do.... so it's not 100% believable, but then again, this is an action film, and the plots are usually far fetched. At least there aren't any HUGE plot holes or leaps of logic, and it's certainly a thrilling ride. The explosions and gun play start fairly early on in the film, and keep going with a few very short scenes of exposition.
The stunts are pretty damn amazing from the get go, so much so, that you keep thinking that they've done the big one already and there can't be anything bigger still coming. Boy, is that a wrong assessment. The stunts just keep getting bigger and bigger and more amazing and really really cool.
So who's in the film? We have Bruce Willis (Die Hard 1,2,3...) together with hacker sidekick Justin Long (I'm a Mac) who's become unknowingly wrapped up in a huge terrorist plot - a 'fire sale' to take down all the US's infrastructure (as it's all controlled by computer) and everything must go - traffic control, the stock exchange, gas and power... The mastermind behind this is Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock from Deadwood). Bruce finds himself protecting Justin as they try to nut this out, with a bit of contact with the FBI Cyber Terrorist group. Of course, McClane's done this before and knows the score so is determined to bring down the villains even before it gets a little personal...
Big dumb action flick? Sure. But it entertained me for 2 hours so much so that I didn't even *notice* how long it was. Lots of action, stunts, gunplay, and explosions. Bruce is still the man.
