The John Edwards saga is just...wow. There really are no words for the stupidity. There was an article in New York magazine last week that makes it all even plainer. I mean, Sophocles couldn't write anything this unadulterated--he brought about his own downfall through his sheer stupidity and hubris. Democratic politicians (cf. Gary Hart, another good-looking charismatic pol who dared the media to follow him around looking for evidence of infidelity, "they'd be very bored" and of course was busted; see also Bill Clinton) seem particularly prone to this. Republican politicians are a whole other barrel of fish; they're the ones who trumpet loudly about the sanctity of (heterosexual) marriage and how bad everyone else is, while they're busy getting busy (see Newt Gingrich, Henry Hyde and Larry Craig).
