There's a great collection of work by gay and lesbian cartoonists which features a one-pager by Diane DeMassa ("Hothead Paisan"). She talks about David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust and how his simply *existing* at that repressive time, not giving a damn about people knowing he was "a big space faggot," saved her and a lot of the other "weird" kids from offing themselves.
I can't think of a time Bowie ever seemed to care what anyone thought. And that took some nerve, given the looks he tried on over the years. :) An inspiring fellow indeed.
