It was pointed out that Men and others sometimes do apologize in the books, but they use "pardon me" or "I beg your pardon" instead. I had neglected to search on "pardon," so I did that as a follow-up. And I do think it backs up what was being said in the comments for the last entry, because "your pardon" is subtly different from "I'm sorry" or "forgive me." It's not quite so blatantly admitting of wrong or offense, because it's asking the other person to let it go in the form of more or less stating that they should do so. Taking it for granted, almost. Of course, context and tone of voice can soften that a lot, but it's still a rather less humbling phrasing of the apology.
