Gross.

Grossest smell of entire week: I hosed out the yard waste cart today. Here in Seattle we get to throw food scraps into the yard waste as well, and we haven't cleaned our bin all summer, so you can imagine the grossness. There was this *sludge* formed at the bottom, which gave off noxious gases as I hosed it out and dumped it on the garden. The cart ( Read more... )

Unfortunately, my day did involve a similarly gross trash can from which emanated an odor so foul I can only describe it as unholy. I mean, sure, trash cans smell. They're trash cans. Trash generally doesn't smell nice. That's part of the reason it's trash and gets relocated quickly to said trash can.

But yesterday I was working in the driveway and actually had to move the trash can because the stench was unbearable. I have no idea what we put in it that gave rise to such a demonic presence, but even after the trash guy came today (the poor guy) it was an assault on the nose that had to be vanquished with extreme prejudice.

There was some manner of noxious... sludge at the bottom, there were creepy crawlies that were loving it. I hit it with the hose from about 10 feet away, which made it tolerable. I plan to go in for a second round of exorcism tomorrow with Simple Green, maybe bleach. If that doesn't bring it back under control, I may have to use fire.

These demons must be purged!

LOL. Nicely written! And try an exorcist if all else fails.

I know--I really have no idea what some of the sludgy lumps even *were* in a previous incarnation. Decomposition, so mysterious and terrifying.

The fragrant herbs, and leaving the cart open all night to dry out, did seem to work wonders for mine.

Uuurgh.

My city has an excellent recycling service, and one of the things they take away is food waste. So we have a bin for that. But it has smelled suuuper gross in the summer. I feel bad for the bin men.

Yeah, our bins get picked up weekly, but sometimes stuff sticks in the bottom and doesn't get shaken out, and we'd been remiss about hosing them down. Yuck. I love what the bin men do for us, but with my sensitive nose I think I could only be a recycling pick-up person, never trash or food waste.

Yep. That's pretty rank. We have a variety of bins to use but fortunately our food waste bin gets collected once a week. I've become quite addicted to different scents at the moment. Glenn did some reading and discovered that apparently floral smells assist with pain management so I have invested in a sweet pea highly scented candle which is indeed lovely and quite strong so hopefully when I go into labour we can use that at home.

I also have a new perfume which I love which is " combines top notes of pepper and purple freesia accords. In the middle white heliotrope and jasmine accords go beautifully with hibiscus blossom and rose. Precious cedarwood and sandalwood create a delicate base fragrance, which expresses the essence of feminine beauty." Whatever. It smells nice and makes me feel better and less tired when I smell it.

They do pick up the yard waste weekly here too, but gunk sticks inside sometimes and doesn't get shaken into the truck, and we hadn't been good about cleaning the bin out. Thus, ew.

Hurray for the healing powers of scent! I do love a cedar/sandalwood base. If you can enjoy perfume while pregnant, so much the happier. My nose was too sensitive for it, which was heartbreaking. But luckily my sense of smell went back to normal after delivery. And second births are usually much faster than the first ones, so you might not have a lot of time to enjoy candles or other distraction techniques during labor (I sure didn't)--but that's a good thing on the whole! :)

I'm going into town next week to pick up some massage oil - sweet almond and sandalwood is what has been recommended for use during labour. When I had morning sickness the smell of mint really helped as well. My nose has been pretty sensitive which could be why I've gone for much stronger scents and perfumes at the moment to cover up any nasty stinks. How is it a 5 year old can make such disgusting smells with his bum or his feet?!

Urgh, I feel for you! One time Steve had eaten a garlic-heavy dinner during my first trimester, and I could hardly stand to be in the same car with him. Mint was acceptable, though, as was citrus. It'll all go back to normal before long! Well, at least in the nose category. "New normal" for the overall family life. :)

I gotta say Mol, I began salivating at the mention of sludge at the bottom of the bin. For a composting POV that sludge would be akin to black gold. I call it a missed opportunity.

You may be on to something, Dean. The spots on the parched lawn where I dumped the sludge and sprinkled dirt on it are now showing newly sprouted, happy grass. The leaves are falling now, so I'm using those as mulch in the garden beds in the meantime!
