A Political Affair

To be absolutely truthful, it is clearly possible for homosexuality to be promoted, whether through sexuality education programs or in other ways. The great minds of people like Dr. Thio Su Mien are certainly right to believe that homosexuality can be promoted, although this does not mean that it has been promoted through AWARE's sexuality ( Read more... )

Act non-judgmental―after judging with your heart, mind, and soul. From the fictitious conversation above, it is clear that no one has even said that homosexuality is sinful. But it is the assumption. Even if you tell someone, “I think I support the opposition over the PAP,” I doubt people will say, “Are you sure? Maybe it's a passing phase. Maybe you are really a PAP supporter like the rest of us.” To say so would be to assume that it is rather strange (if one tries not to use the word “abnormal”) to support anyone else but the PAP. And one doubts that the screwed-up but screw-loose person who might think it sinful to support the opposition would have a similar reaction if you say, “I don't do politics.”

Reading this made my bite my lip, for the good reason that, yes, that happens; it happened; I can testify to quite a number of people who told me that, and who told someone else in pretty much the same boat that, and I know I got off easy because I'm a stubborn bitch who eventually concluded that how I see myself is who I am myself, ( ... )

What we need is not imposed neutrality and enforced tolerance. What we need is for everyone to have the equal freedom to be non-neutral and confrontational, though this might make Molly sound somewhat too subversive for her own good. But confrontation is not anarchy and it certainly does not preclude peace.

Thank you.

More than that, we need a truly secular value neutral government. People in society can hold whatever views they want to. Ok... they really shouldn't, but the government shouldn't force those views on people.... Now I'm sounding incoherent. Back to point form

1. There are different views in society
2. Some are better than others (no choice lah... there are irrational pigs like Thio Su Mien and her daughter Thio Li An)
3. Even so government should still be value neutral

Anyway... a more detailed discussion of the issues can be found in My latest post

There is no such thing as a value-free government, of course. The emphasis on secularism itself is a value of sorts, after all. What is happening, quite ironically, though, is that the government is perhaps pretty value free in its core. It has no values and will at its convenience play one set of values against another. It will claim to be conservative when it wants, or demonize democracy one moment and claim to be democratic the next, all for the sake of perpetuating its power.

If an authoritarian government has any values, surely it is simply the belief that any means is justified or justifiable for the end of eternal power.
