Obliged to Hate, We all must die

Apr 24, 2009 17:41

“I don't understand what has sparked this irrational fear of us . . . and what hatred.” One might imagine someone facing severe discrimination, such as a victim of homophobia, to say this. But in a moment of supremely palatable irony complete with a lingering bitter aftertaste in the mouth, the current President of AWARE, Josie Lau, is the one ( Read more... )

It is just that there is a need to protect the sacred institution of marriage as something heterosexuals (or perhaps bisexuals?) have an exclusive right to, is it not? And for this, one might also say that abortion is terrible. So is divorce. Or that gender roles contrary to what is prescribed by a particular religious text (or one interpretation of it) is abominable.Molly, Molly, Molly, Molly, Molly... My irrational need to repeat your name a few times and your irrationality on the matter of AWARE are both on full display today. The great learned "feminist mentor" Dr Thio Su Mien has already come out to educate us that she understands homosexuality and "what it’s all about": in this case, lesbians are "very often from families where you have abusive fathers ( ... )

Hmm . . . Lesbians are a bane to marriage and family. Do you think Dr. Thio would approve of a law (her area of expertise) that makes it mandatory for all women who are married to men who are or could be abusive fathers to either not have children or abort their fetuses?

Also, where do abusive fathers come from in the first place? Homosexuals?

Don't worry too much about the "death threat". We are dealing with characters that run to the police when someone expresses a wish to piss on their grave.

If the death threats are for real, maybe I should join their side when I'm feeling particularly suicidal.

(I'm not the same anon. commenter as above; I just don't have an LJ. Sorry.)

I think something that a lot of people on both sides are forgetting is that Constance Singam is a Catholic. And a feminist. And a liberal. - To wit, another liberal Catholic feminist, whee! (albeit a much bigger shot than this poster :P) Awesome.

This particularly at those who insist that the proponents of the original AWARE are lesbian atheists... NOWAI.

Some people use God to justify their whims. Others don't. :)

Yeah, as I mentioned to jinxed_life above, even though threatening others is wrong, the issue is more complex when we consider verifiability and the intention behind the publicity.

which is more powerful: the 10 commandments or the 7 deadly sins?

Me says it's the latter.

Wow. Extremely powerful stuff. I am writing a paper at this moment
on the Holy Bible's dramatic impact on civil rights and I enjoyed your thoughts. I wanted to share something with you in case you haven't thought about it this way. Let's play along with this theological perspective and for a moment imagine that homosexuality is an "abomination". In what way does this effect homosexuals freedom to marry? The Bible I read says that God told Adam and Eve do not eat of this tree or you shall truly die. They ate anyway. Why? Because God gave them free will to obey, or to sin. So, my question is; If God gave Adam & Eve (heterosexuals) the choice between good and evil, shouldn't a homosexual have equal free will to indulge in whatever sin she/he pleases? Even marriage? Even when you play the game the Bible way, a ban on gay marriage does not measure up.

That is if you think about it rationally. In practice, the problem will really lie with how those who believe themselves to be God-inspired would react. Most likely, they will claim that "the world's" is misinterpreting the Bible and they, the chosen ones, have to act upon the will of God to oppose the right for gays to get married. They will argue that it's not about giving gays the choice, but about how allowing gay marriage would (somehow ...) lead to moral decadence in general and will incur God's wrath (a la Old Testament times?).
