Forbes lists the highest paid authors. James Patterson comes in at #1, having made $70 million in the past year. Seventy million dollars. I? Have never once been compelled to read a James Patterson book so I will refrain from snarking about him too much, but I do find it strange that the Forbes article claims he writes out all his books in longhand ( Read more... )

I guess that's how James Patterson, Inc. could afford to do what felt like a blanket TV advertising campaign for his last book. Those ads were everywhere!

I tend to shy away from things with a lot of hype (exhibit 1: I have still not seen Titanic), but I will say that I really enjoyed The Corrections and before that, The 27th City.

I am also somewhat hype-averse, which I guess is why all these superlatives like "genius" and "novel of the century" seem a bit off-putting to me. That said, I'll give the book a try because apparently the hype has managed to pique my curiosity a bit.

Ho ho, I love how that reviewer went all Anne Rice in the comments. I read The Corrections way back when, enjoyed it well enough, made it to the end...but I can't remember a thing about it now. That's not a good sign. Actually, I do remember that sauerkraut played a role in the plot. Whaaaat. I'll probably give this one a go too, if just to see what all the fuss is about.
