I don't think Eliza has the range to be very convincing out of her party girl/slayer persona. Still, it won't stop me from watching. I agree with you - she seemed to have forgotten her pants in the first scenes.
I think Amy used to be an "active" and was damaged.
My guess is that the boxing scene was all about taking a lickin and keeping on tickin. Demonstrate how he won't give up. He has to be family or boyfriend. I couldn't tell if it was him in the last scene - with the two dead people and Pre-Echo on the tv.
Or was that the mysterious stranger that is after her? The mess that got her to the Dollhouse in the first place.
Hope we have more than a few eps to find out. FOX is big on the cancellations.
Just a quick comment about Eliza's first dress. It was extraordinarily short, but I think she was wearing hotpants with fringe underneath it. I thought it was adorable.
I pretty much agree with you...on just about everything. Clunky as an episode, but with potential. And that's a really interesting insight about the episode itself being a blank slate. I think you're right.
It seems like I keep seeing references to how the show is sexist or squicky or whatever, and to me, that's the point. These are the bad guys! We're supposed to feel horror over what it means to be a "doll". I'm with you on this, though I think that enough people didn't see it that way at all that Joss needs to work harder to present it that way. Because I think a lot of people out there are like me: if I thought for one second that this wasn't supposed to be creepy, I would stop watching this show immediately, no matter who's involved. He's going to lose a lot of thoughtful viewers if he doesn't make sure that he communicates that this isn't his "geeky whiteboy fantasy," as I've been hearing it called

My goodness, that Tahmoh certainly is pretty. He can box in every episode!
OK, seriously, you need to watch BSG. It has Tahmoh and Jamie! Michael Trucco is also pretty easy on the eyes. Plus, there was an entire episode devoted to boxing! I'm bringing the mini series to DC. Be warned.
I'm hoping AA is a failed active. Someone who actually *wanted* to become one and couldn't for whatever reason.
I think the biggest hurdle for me when it comes to this show will be believing in ED as a different person every week.
See this isn't that big a deal to me, I think 1) I've seen Eliza do characters I really don't think were Faith or Faith like, and she was fine, 2) I think that the artifice of her "playing" these characters is supposed to be foregrounded, even and especially to the clients and the audience.
Having said that no she was not/is not convincing as anything prim/buttoned up, but I think she nailed when the emotions of her other lives punched through into that job. But again I think her not selling that role was supposed to be part of the story, why else have the client speak his own disbelief out loud?
