I'm glad you sort of liked it, even if it's not your favorite. I'll have to respectfully disagree with you being over Mr. Darcy though. And I understand what you mean, about rom-coms stealing the plot. Luckily, I read the book when I was like, 13, so I had the opposite experience. I think you'd have the same issue with all of Austen's work, but her writing makes up for it, in my opinion. If you feel like reading more, I'd say Persuasion or Northanger Abbey might be more to your liking than say, Emma or Mansfield Park.
I wonder if I might have liked it better if I had read it in my early teens like so many girls, but then I remember that I've always been cynical towards fluffy romance, so I guess I'm just not cut out for rom-com.
I'll admit that my cynical side and own opinions on human nature probably contributed to my aversion to Mr. Darcy's transformation in the third volume. I did genuinely find him swoon-worthy from around the time Elizabeth was with Jane at Netherfield until he went mushy - Austen was able to dance the fine line between Total Douche and Sarcastic with ease and I enjoyed it.
And thanks for the suggestions! Even though I'm not into ♥ romance ♥, I wouldn't be opposed to reading her fluffier stories - her writing really does make everything worthwhile. I was completely engrossed in P&P while I was reading it despite not liking the plot all that much.
