In light of the latest "Yay nuclear power is awesome and solar/wind won't cut it and only fools think otherwise to either of these propositions" media and blogosphere blitz, I refer you all here

That comment about solar panel manufacture producing toxic by-products raised my eyebrows, too. it's probably true; the question is "How much, and how significant is it?". There are, in fact, drawbacks to _all_ systems that produce major energy supplies. I think this one needs to be investigated, and considered. (And solar power probably cannot, with modern technology, be relied upon as the major energy resource, if only because there's no good way to store it for use when the sun isn't shining.)
It seems clear, to me, that coal and oil aren't viable major sources in the long term, and nuclear is (at best) questionable, so we probably should be concentrating on wind, wave, geothermal, and small-scale hydro.
I don't suppose that will be done in any countries where Oil and Coal Industries are big enough to control the Government.
Thanks for your comment and I mostly agree except to point out that even with present technology, solar can be stored in sufficient quantities to make it viable even for nightpowering, albeit much more inefficiently than could be wished.
