I'll give it a look, if my antique browser is compatable with the site, but probably won't comment there -- my knowledge of Economics is pretty much limited to ending the year with a little money left over, so all I could contribute would be some vague (albeit firm) Opinions .
Smith sounds (from the quotes you provide) remarkable sensible. IMHO, "The Free Market" is an unrealistic Platonic Ideal not operating in The Real World, and "Enlightened" is rarely an applicable modifier for "Self-Interest" in the contemporary Real World. And the big finanacial firms seem (to me) to be dealing almost entirely with a kind of artificial concept ("money") rather than with real wealth/useful products. I keep getting the feeling that "In the world of Theory, everything works -- except for actually putting food on people's tables".
