Oh me ...

Oct 05, 2007 03:18

Well, with the advent of viewing the preview of Viva Laughlin during CSI, which led to a long discussion with my roommate about BBC shows being remade by US networks, I decided that I wanted to make a list of British TV shows that I enjoy, many of which if ever made into American versions would probably end up hurting my soul ... Not a few of which ( Read more... )

Yep. Blackpool has been revamped into Viva Laughlin, and I'm very, very scared that it is going to be overdone or drawn out or just generally stomped all over. *is very scared*

Wait. There is going to be a US LoM? Because if so I shall cry. I shall cry hard and long and hide under the couch.

The problem with Top Gear was that the American's didn't get it. They thought it was about cars, when really, it's about buffoonery and very gently homoeroticism.

Colm Meaney's in the US.LoM. They're setting it in I think Boston/New York and they're all Irish-American cops.

Ooh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY. I couldn't find you on line yesterday.

Yeah, but it didn't help that they tried to cut out everything but the car info - the chat show stuff, the fun stuff, all that was chucked and it came out something completely different. Which I find sad. Because the show is AWESOME in and of itself.

Don't get me wrong, I love Colm Meaney (I suspect he'd be in the Guv's part). But ... Urgh. I don't think I can watch it. It's like when they remade Psycho. It's a masterpiece - why would you do that, even if you have a good director and good actors?

THANK YOU! XD I wasn't really around ...

Heh. One of my favourite ever moviemaking quotes was Gus Van Sant on why he remade Psycho. "So no one else would have to."

I used to love Are You Being Served.

I enjoyed Whose Line Is It Anyway, American version. Most of the time, I just wish they would show the British version instead of trying to remake it.

i haven't seen the new Dr. Who, but I hear it's good! I miss the old one...

Meee toooo. XD My mom and I used to watch it together when I was little.

I liked it, but not as much as the original, and I was never much for Drew Carey, plus they really just kept giving the same people the same challenges, whereas the original show was a free for all. But I'm picky. XD I agree with you about the remaking thing, truly.

It's sooooo good! And I love the Classic. You should rent the new or try to find it. The DVDs of the last three seasons, I believe, are available now ...

*jumps in to rec some UK shows not on the list*

1) The IT Crowd - if you like Black Books and Father Ted, and are a bit of a computer nerd, you should love this. I'm recommending it to everyone left, right and centre at the moment, and everyone's liked it so far.

2) Mock The Week. Political panel comedy - basically a bunch of comedians from all over the place taking the piss out of the week's news.

That is all.

Also look into snagging the DVD of The Amazing Mrs Pritchard. It's coming out on DVD in the US soon (I know, I checked) and is LOVELY.

I've seen a clip or two from The IT Crowd and I think it's hilarious. I've definitely got it on my 'Need To Watch' list.

I have never heard of that. I'll have to check it out!

Thanks for the recs! :D

You know I loves me Britcoms, especially Black Books, Vicar of Dibley (which i heard they're redoing with Kirstie Alley - WTF?!?!?!) and Wild West. But I'm absolutely GUTTED to hear that the Americans are remaking Australian classic Kath n Kim - that show is so quintessentially Australian I can't imagine it Americanized. Even though Molly Shannon is in it, and I love her, I just think it's a terrible idea. Not at all grache.

I do know. (Kirstie Alley? WHAT? Noooo. *sobs*) I've heard of Wild West, but I haven't seen it ... >.>

And that? Is sad. I'm so sorry. I love Molly Shannon, too, but still. Not cool. Why do they insist on doing it? It's like saying ... "Hey, there's those pyramids, they're pretty awesome. But really, they're foreign. So we should build our own. And make it much shinier and profitable, because we can. Oh look. It's the Luxor." ... Okay, it's a weird, Las Vegas metaphor. But still. Or it'd be like taking a work by a Dutch master and remaking it in an 'American' style because you have the money and you feel like it'd be more accessible.
