FUUUUCK.

Broken into. Again. (second time in this apartment.)

They didn't get anything absolutely vital, but the sliding glass door was jimmied open and it won't really lock now. FUCK.

Anybody in Austin have suggestions for places to move? We were meaning to move soon anyway.

will the door lock with a security bar, at least?

maybe you should start looking for a house.

Break-ins suck.

"Anybody in Austin have suggestions for places to move? We were meaning to move soon anyway."

I assume you want to stay close-ish to Dell. What $$$ range were you looking for?

The apartment complex formerly known as Oakwood that Spyderella and I lived in was clean, safe, and decent (although it is built on reclaimed landfill and is slowly shifting and sinking). It would be a good interim place, and could be a good, "until we get a house" place. (It served as such for Spyderella and me.)

I think there are houses for rent in our neighborhood, which is mighty close to Dell. What you consider affordable for rent is the important factor here.

After dropping Spyderella off at work, I got prices for San Paloma and Mandalay (they're right next to Dell on Parmer).

San Paloma has nicer apartments and much nicer amenities for prices that are slightly lower than Mandalay. San Paloma prices are:

$599 for a 1 bed, 1 bath @ 575 sq. ft.
$640 for a 1 bed, 1 bath @ 650 sq. ft.
$775 for a 1 bed, 1 bath @ 875 sq. ft.
$795 for a 1 bed, 1 bath + study @ 875 sq. ft. (This is my floorplan of choice, but it's not me who's moving.)
$825 for a 2 bed, 2 bath @ 1,000 sq. ft.
They also have 1,175 and 1,250 sq. ft. apartments

Deposit is $150. "Administrative" fee (at time of application) is $50 and the application fee is $45 per person (may be lower for a married couple). They have a $20 per month discount for Dell employees, but I don't remember if that's included in the prices I'm quoting here (I think that it is.).

Just FYI...

Ooh! We've been poking around on Craigslist too, but that looks good. We aren't at that Dell campus, but it would still be awfully convenient. :)

It turns out our lease is up in January, and breaking it would cost at least as much as staying in it. So we're not moving -right now- after all. Soon, yes.

Argh! I'm so sorry.

I love having a house. Our neighborhood is rather sweet, and a number of houses are for sale and a few for rent. It's worth checking out, at least.

I'm so sorry for you guys. Motivation to set up routine data backups off-site, eh?

*hug*

That does sound worth checking out! Victor had purchased a replacement for the notebook that was stolen already, and they didn't even touch the desktop hardware--only the easy to grab and sell stuff. Still, routine data backups are always good.

What a great motivation to reduce our amount of stuff, too.

Hate that feeling. Even thoguh nothing serious was taken, you still feel violated. Sorry you had to go through it.

Other places to live?
I love where we are currently. Not sure if you know ubiquity (but most people do), anyway her family lives in the same community.
It's right near the corner of 183 & Mopac. Beautiful townhomes with nice management. Called the Arbors of Tallwood.

I'd recommend them to any of my friends, if you can get in that is. They tend to stay pretty full.

I wish I had some good advice however, the only advice I can give is a "stay away" - as in stay away from The Gables apartments and the Orchard apartments across the street from the The Gables. Lots of break in's and vandalism coupled with shoddy maintenance and uppity management. It took Gables management three days to fix our door after someone kicked it in and then the maintenance man accused us of having caused the damage ourselves!

When you are ready to move, I'm available to help move boxes.
