I used to do Markham to Mississauga and then downtown to Richmond Hill and then Leslieville to Vaughan. Even thought it could be a pain in the ass I still loved the commute. I had at least an hour of complete alone time to do whatever I wanted (and was able to do within the confines of a car).

I loved watching people, I loved leaving really early in the morning in the winter and watching the sun rise, I loved driving in all types of weather. Everything about commuting is awesome.

I am weird but I am glad you are weird too!

Everyone in Montreal is a merge-later. It's just the way they drive out there. If the lane is empty, you're in it. When it ends, you get out of it. End of story.

There are certainly a lot of neighbourhoods in Toronto where you don't need to drive, but once you get off the subway lines a bit it's tough. Even if you do live on a subway/streetcar, the transit is all kind of set up to keep you in Toronto. In the morning, there are a tonne of GO trains coming IN to Toronto but very few leaving Toronto; in the afternoon rush hour it's the opposite.

If you're trying to get all the way to Niagara, though, you can definitely take a train.

I'm sure you'll get better at predicting what traffic is going to do. The brain seems to be designed to make a lot of less-than-conscious decisions and integrate a lot if information that is not noticed at a thematic level. Though I'm more familiar with learning to anticipate individual moves than aggregate ones. For example, in Montreal, I know before it happens that the driver in front of me at a stop light is going to pull out into the oncoming lane in order to make a right turn in front of the car stopped in front of him, just as the light turns green and the car he's cutting off is stepping on the accelerator.

I've been enjoying driving across the city in my mom's car, mostly because there's a nice stereo with a CD player, so that I don't have to listen to radio static over my Ravel. But I'd rue the lost time if it were any more than a half hour drive. It's not the process of driving that would bother me so much, but the fact that the day is so short.
