South Africa Has Too Many Elephants

So reports The New York Times, anyway. Apparently, there's a very real chance that they'll have to start killing the excess animals to prevent future destruction caused by large herds.

Around the ol' Reserve Room (my current place of employment, for those not up on their Jack-ellanea), the article raised a number of questions:

Babar has a wife, four children, a cousin, and a set of councillor, so I assume that after his death a vicious power struggle would occur. I don't think a human could possible win; if nothing else, one of the elephants could just crush you beneath his giant, leaderly feet.

I'm pretty sure Babar could talk. If that is the case, I'd probably be more like, "HOLY SHIT, A TALKING ELEPHANT!" That would be followed by running in fear. In fact, I'd probably run in fear from any elephant.

There was an interesting article about elephants in the NY Times magazine a few months ago. It posited that human insanity was causing elephant insanity, or something like that. Really sad article. It's got to be online somewhere.
