there had been a few murders down there (including one at a fast-food joint), and it's not very well-lit. i didn't feel comfortable waiting to say hi to the band after midnight in that area, anyway.

Colin is interviewed in the new "music edition" of The Believer (which I am enjoying more than the previous issues I've read).

I thought the Long Winters were awesome when I saw them open for the Decemberists last Tuesday. They had that "mystery pop" sense a la early R.E.M. which pushes all of the right buttons with me. And yes, the singer was good with the stand up routine -- he did a funny bit about Frank Sinatra walking around Hoboken.

they drew on some new songs in the set, including "engine" (which is making me look forward to the next decemberists album -- 2005 can't come fast enough)

i did, however, yell out for "the song is you" whenever colin asked for requests. this made him beam. i felt a little tickly after that (ladies, do you read me?).

the woman (i know, i was confused, too) is none other than dory previn. there's a cute caricature of colin inside the magazine, with his profile -- he's in military garb and holding a banjo.

the last time i saw the decemberists (back in october), i had a long-ish talk with colin about the genius filmmaker guy maddin (from whose film archangel the decemberists sampled the dialouge in "youth and beauty brigade"). there was a tiny part of me that wondered if he remembered that. though i'm probably flattering myself...i'm not that memorable, i hope. :)

Man, you are so lucky!!!!!!! He probably does remember you, particularly if the conversation was about something both of you guys were really into that not many other are into.
This Guy Maddin sounds interesting...I know he has that Ice Nymph film that sounds interesting.

As for Colin, I don't know what I'd talk to him about if I met him. I'd like clam up and expose myself for the drooling teenybopper that I am. I'd be like too embarassed. :\

You sound really knowledgeable about film. I'm just a dilettante...what would you recommend a novice such as moi delving into?

ach, i'm better some times than others at the whole "i want to know movies! edumacate me!" thing. :)

of course you should see the classics, like citizen kane and sunrise. anything directed by murnau is worth your time.

experimental film goddess maya deren made some incredible short subjects.

OH! of course! powell and pressburger were these two british filmmakers in the 1940s-1960s who directed a series of wonderful features. normally i tell people to start with the red shoes, but as a fan of the decemberists you might appreciate the life and death of colonel blimp, their utterly incredible war movie. see everything they make. :)

oh, and for the love of god, woman, do not start with twilight of the ice nymphs. it's not very good. archangel and dracula: pages from a virgin's diary, on the other hand, are manna from heaven.

Wes Anderson fronting neutral milk hotel??? I think that would make for a wonderful combination, except maybe for Wes's flare for Elliot Smith-esque tunes. Don't know how the hotel would recieve that..would like to hear it though.

That brings us to a whole new realm, directors and music. I would enjoy listening to jim jarmusch fronting for shudder to think...anyone anyone?

it would be neat to hear jarmusch front television. so much cool, so much downtown nyc history. who could bring their lame selves to listen to them, though?

and then, of course, there's the levon helm and robert altman jam session...

haha, I would be one of the ones who snuck so no one could call him a "lamo" (which wouldnt be so bad just to hear someone actually call someone else that again)

But I would be front and center for the Levinson/Rorke come back tour in good ol Baltimore.
