I borrow a lot of books and find out about authors and subjects through the books I catalog at work.
I really do not purchase many books anymore. There are too many in the house already. My public library supplies me with all my needs and a few dozen yards from me is a large collection that I'm only beginning to explore.
Oh god, I'm a shameless biblophile. I haven't even sold back college textbooks because I love books that much. It's now to the point that my room at my parents' house has so many books in it that it's pretty much unusable.
I'm a university professor, so some of the books I buy each year are for my own teaching and research and the quality of the book and relevance for my work (as well as the currency of the research it contains) influences my purchasing decisions.
well maybe it's too obvious to mention, but I'm big on author loyality - if there's an author I really like I'll often buy their new stuff sight unseen.
And the numbers change - I picked an average, but for example while I was in the states last winter I bought over 20 books over a period of a couple months... :D
A lot of my book-buying decisions are made purely on my feelings at the time. If I'm in a somber mood, I gravitate to the darker genres and buy those or borrow those from friends. Most of my collection is erotica however... so... yeah. LOL
