Hair Care Question

My question is this:  What is everyone doing to help prevent/repair split ends and keep their hair in good shape without trimming?  I stopped cutting my hair about a year ago, and keeping it from frizzing/splitting is a never-ending battle. I wash my hair every other day, to keep from stripping the oils too much, and use a fairly expensive shampoo ( Read more... )

Do you ever use a leave in conditioning treatment? I have found that doing what I call a "coconut milk soak" to be very benefial to my dry, frizzy hair. You take a can of unsweetened coconut milk from the grocery store and pour the milk over your head, working it into your hair & scalp. Then you will place a showercap over your head (regular kitchen plastic wrap can work too) and either leave the milk on your hair for a couple of hours or take a blow dryer and dry your hair for as long as your hand will let you. After you have allowed the milk to soak into your hair by either method above, just shampoo & condition as normal. Your hair should be quite a bit restored after the first soaking. I usually do this about twice a month, especially during the summer when the humidity causes some really crazy hair occurences.

I have never heard of that, but it sounds like it couldn't hurt to try it! I will see what I can hunt up at the grocery store.

My hair has much improved since I cover it, far less split ends and difference between an oily tp and dry ends. I only wash my hair every 5 days in winter, 3-4 days in summer; I use a heavy duty conditioner (the type that is recommended to use once a week or every two weeks) every time on the last 4-5 inches.

when i had hair i didn't dye it or brush it. (this picture is not my real hair)

it depends on the kind of hair you have. my hubby has the kind of hair that must be trimmed, no questions. if you are having problems i recommend a trim.

I don't mean to be offensive, but I've always wondered a bit about it. Can you explain a little about not cutting your hair? How is that an expression of modesty? Is there a specific source for it from your culture/faith? I truly mean no offense, only curiousity. Thanks for understanding.

Apostolics/Pentecostals generallly do not cut their hair. There is a passage in 1 Corinthians about this. I don't know about other religions or cultures, but I believe it is supposed be a sign of submission to God.

Forgive me if I speak out of context, I'm not Apostolic ( though I have several friends who are ), nor am I some kind of religious expert.

Thanks for sending me to Corinthians. I found the verse (I Corinthians 11:15) and have been doing a bit of googling since you pointed me in the right direction. Thanks! I appreciate it.

I haven't cut my hair in three and a half years, I use Suave shampoo and conditioner because it's cheap and I go through a lot of shampoo and conditioner. I really like Garnier's Long & Strong Shampoo and Conditioner, I also use their Long & Strong leave-in conditioner a couple times a week and I really like it!
