Shirts

I'm new here, and I have really enjoyed reading back and learning about all the perspectives and resources.  I tried read a lot here, but it seems there's a lot focus in the posts on hair, skirts, or dresses and those aren't my problem.  I have increasingly had more and more trouble with shirt length.  I'm 5'10" and I weigh around (guessing here) ( Read more... )

I'm tall and long-torsoed, so I need to get tall-girls shirts to get length I want, or a style that's built long.

Kurti and other tunics work really well for me. I keep thinking I'll take up sewing, as well, and lengthen the pattern in torso/arm as I need.

edit: adding in a couple of vertical body darts can help a lot of things look less "dumpy".

I'm so in the box, I hadn't even thought of tunics. I have one that I really like the fit. now if it wasn't sheer so that I still am stuck finding a garment long enough under it :P Kurta are very easy to sew too, I think I'll dig out my fabric stash and see what I can come up with.

More in the box thinking from me. I tend to wear a lot of cotton knits, would that look okay?

Tunics were my first thought as well. From your description, I think my shape is similar to yours, and I wear tunics a lot. Most of my summer ones are the kind that are often sold as beachwear (but not sheer). I have more difficulty finding ones that are suitable for winter, but I do have one thick cotton one with a hood that I got from Shukr, and two that were sold as dresses, but actually look great over jeans. I get mine from eBay with searches like "boho tunic" and "hippy dress", but since you're a sewer, you might want to think about customising some dress patterns as well :-)

Cold-weather weights are trickier to find, to be sure. If it is long-sleeved you could always layer it with a t or long-john scoop neck underneath. I need to put at least a cami to avoid "drafts".

I have two light wool kurti that I found via a google search and a wool-knit sweater from Monsoon (ebay) that is cut and decorated as a kurta, so I'm good. But in winter I wear a lot of turtleneck and scoopneck sweaters.

Look for shirts designed for "Long Torso"s.

Who carries these? If I knew where to buy them, I'd be a very happy lady.

Look for tall women's shops on google

Also, old reliable catalog purveyors such as Eddie Bauer, JC Penney, and Land's End have a lot of Talls

J. Jill has lots of stuff suitable for tall ladies but is spendier.

awesome! none of these are places I have ever shopped for myself (although I hit Penney's up for my VERY big and tall husband), so I'll have to check them out! I was just complaining a couple weeks ago at the Men's Big & Tall that Women's Long and Tall is gone and I have no idea where to shop anymore.

hi there. i weight the same as you but i'm shorter. my answer to the shirts-not-covering-the-belly problems? i buy shirts from the TALL section. Old Navy and the Gap and many many other stores have "tall" women's sections on their sites. I wouldn't be surprised if some sites even had tall plus-size stuff, but I fit in the XXL in most non-plus-size clothing lines and am just a tad too small for most plus-size shirts... though if you saw me you'd certainly assume i'd count as "plus size". Anyway, shirts from the tall section are SO great, they cover me even when I'm bending over. Sometimes they're a little too long since I'm only 5'6", but that's better than too short! Tunic-style shirts are also nice and very stylish right now.

Goodness! I'm learning today that I just should go to the mall! I've always shopped at Ann Taylor and Liz Claiborne, I just assumed if they weren't cutting it, the teeny bopper stores wouldn't!

Caveat: A lot of times the tall-girls stuff is only in the catalog/online.

I think Chadwicks, Roamans, and other catalog sites have some options for tall shirts. I guess it might take some trial and error to know if they'll work for you, though.

heh, I feel kinda silly. I wondered why there wasn't posting much on this topic, and it turns out it's because I seem to be the only person who didn't know I could go to the mall :D
