Nine year olds should not get migraines.

General call for experiences and / or knowledge.Hey gang. Having a rough evening. I need to figure out if my son is having migraines. My reasons for posting this are twofold. One, I'm looking for opinions from those who either have migraines or have first hand knowledge of living with migraines within the family. Two, I clearly need to start ( Read more... )

I've gotten bad headaches since I was a teenager, particularly in my late teens & early twenties. For a long time I didn't know that they were migraines because they weren't painful in the same way other headaches are painful. Instead light would start to be too bright, almost with auras, noises too sharp, touch too rough, my propensity for motion sickness much higher, and smells were nauseating. I would feel overstimulated. If it got bad enough, I couldn't tolerate light. I learned through trial and error that resting in a cool, dark, quiet, space helps. I've never sought treatment. I learned from a Scientific American article that migraines can involve severe photophobia, and in women are often triggered by shifts in hormones due to the menstrual cycle. Bingo, I had a diagnosis ( ... )

Much of the description of your headaches sounds similar to what I see in Ch--. Its hard to get him to articulate his experience in a way that an adult can understand. He's not good at categorizing the pain as either throbbing or pressure based, for example. He's too precise in some ways. Neither word seems exactly right to him and he doesn't like to say its more like one than the other. (sigh.)

He's fine today of course.

This bucket theory is interesting. I can see how it applies to many conditions. (Triggering a mania or depression for example.)

You hardly know me, yet you've given me great gift! How? You actually suggested a good and useful project that will help me feel like I'm doing something-anything. (The printed diary for Ch--.) Perfect. Now I'm wondering why I didn't think of that. I mean, I'm addicted to systems, lists, mood tracking, etc -- why did it not occur to me to use those skills and obsessions in such a way? I am a mystery to myself sometimes :)

Sorry to read that your little one is going through this....
Wish I had some advice, but I would do the Dr. thing, since there does seem to be a family history.

plantgirl does have an excellent suggestion there!
And I agree, the bucket theory....Very Interesting!

Best of luck with this!!!
Hope that little one is rid of those Nasty headaches soon!
:)

I am a massage therapist, and I also get migraines, so I took a 3 day headache seminar a few years ago that focused mainly on migraines ( ... )

I just spent a few minutes peeking through your journal. You write well. And your voice reminds me of shawnmichel. (Yep. I'm on his flist too.) Another calm and peaceful soul. Did you find one of them through the other? Idle curiosity.

Thank you for the information on headaches. I'm taking plantgirl's advice and creating a journal form for Ch--. I talked to him about it today and he seems very interested. We'll collect more data before heading to the doc.

I'm surprised to hear about the problem with soda. My understanding, based on my husband, was that caffeine helps alleviate migraines. (I think some of the adult strength, otc, migraine medications have it as a sort of semi-secret ingredient :)

There are so many good reasons to avoid McDonald's and the like ... we have to be better about eating at home where we don't do the "prepared" thing. I thought your family's letter to McDonald's was fantastic by the by.

Feel free to comment whenever you like. I'm adding you to my friends list, if you don't mind.

Hehe. I've known Shawnmichel for 21 years. He's the one who turned me on the LiveJournal. We've both been writers for that long, so I'm not surprised if we've influenced each other's style. I found you through both Shawnmichel's and plantgirl's journals, even though I don't think they know of each other. I found that interesting ( ... )
