College Stupid...

In class today, my professor created a powerpoint presentation with several slides. On each slide was a picture of somone famous. She then asked us to identify the people. We went through the slides twice, the first time writing down who we thought the people were, and the second time the professor telling us the answers. I've decided that my class ( Read more... )

I don't think I could identify Pelosi, but that's because I get a lot of my national political coverage from NPR or reading the news online w/o paying much attention to the picture.

But yeah, I doubt that's an excuse most of your classmates can use.

Haha, yeah I'm not too surprised by the lack of people who knew Pelosi. And I highly doubt the people in my class listen to NPR. Most of them don't care about politics at all. They're convinced that it's not important. Obviously. Because politics play no role in your lives.

Yeah, that's another thing - I don't actually know what a lot of politicians look like (though I do know Pelosi) because I get a lot of my news from the radio or online from image-light sources. (I, uh, can tell the difference between Barack Obama and Dick Cheney.)

Yeah, I didn't get spector. I know who he is, but I didn't recognize him in the picture. I definitely knew he wasn't Colin Powell though.

Arlen Specter. E's-no O's. Spector is Phil, the rock guy. Not like Google is broken, or anything.

Why would you Google something you thought you knew how to spell, though? It's a name that has multiple spellings and for something as casual as an LJ post I don't think I'd go look up which one it was either. If it was some really hard foreign-sounding name that I thought I only had a 50/50 shot at getting right, I'd look it up, but something like this? Not so much.

True enough, but I check things of which I'm unsure, just because I value accuracy, even in "casual" communication. The man has been the public eye for 40+ years, so I'd think most folks would get his name right.

"of which I'm unsure" -- my point, though, is that I don't think that was the case. When you know someone's name is Jeff, you assume their name is Jeff. Until someone points it out it may not occur to you that it's Geoff. And I can definitely say that this is a name that I hear a lot more than I see. So unless you have a reason to think you might be wrong, why would you look it up? Did you look up every word in your comment? Why not? There is a chance that you could have been mistaken about the spelling of one of them.

Unless you have a specific reason to think you're wrong, I don't see why you'd look something up.

I have no idea what Nancy Pelosi looks like, but I know she's our rather ineffective current Speaker.

But y'know, even if I didn't know what Obama looked like, I could never EVER confuse him with Dick "Buckshot" Cheney. (although I might confuse Cheney's picture with Gorbachev -- have you noticed they kinda look alike? well minus that whole birthmark thing on Gorby's forehead, I suppose.)
