Recently my Apprentice and I completed our builds on our first lightsabers. I say these are our first as the previous ones had no internal electronics. So in many senses they were not lightsabers, as the larger saber community thinks of them

What about modding toy light sabers, like steampunkers do to nerf guns?

Theres a sub-community of taking the ForceFX stuff and modding them. Basically cannibalizing the internals and blade and redoing the externals. Though some just do some minor veneer mods to the externals as well.

I should note that you're not going much cheaper by doing that though. You're starting with a 110+ dollar base and then adding in the cost of any aesthetic components you add. And sometimes you can't do a lot of modding unless you just harvest the electronics because the toy stuff is often all moulded plastic that you can't just remove pieces of :P
