i suppose i never really explained why i took up kempo last quarter, (i also suppose that most of you don't really care) but after seeing the reason why nick's taking karate it seems like it should be explained. he wants to be strong. i'm a bit puzzled because the last and only time we sparred he seemed more focused on how untrained/ average people ( Read more... )

Although Confucius did put a lot of emphasis on ritual, I think his main intention was for the existence of a ritual. In very, very broad terms, how the ritual was done didn't matter as much as for the ritual being done. (And not in a Prince, Machiavelli-sense of "ends justify means." It's China; there is no end to justify.)

that doesn't make much sense, as its the ritual must follow a certain pre-made format to be a ritual, doesn't it? And as for your post...I believe that by partaking in a martial art, u r looking to improve ur self in some manner. And I think the reason they say it improves ur self esteem is to sell people into doing it

Confucius lived during the time of the Warring States period, a time in China that was extremely chaotic. Although a lot of what we attribute to him does go through procedures for certain festivals and events (funerals, weddings, new year's), and there are several claims that these procedures are written down to "preserve and respect" the Ancients, it's highly unlikely that many of these rituals actually existed before Confucius.
It's much more likely that he simply penned them so that China would have rituals for things such as weddings, funerals, etc. at all. Calling them 'ritual' adds that certain air to it, doesn't it?

bah. apologies, i screwed up the end of this post. its fixed now.

the point is that rituals are labeled as such to create and maintain a sense of order. that is why they carry a sense of respect and preservation, as you said rabow, that is the point of their existence. like i said they are formalized and structured. i had already defined them. many rituals are not personalized and that was the only complaint i had about rituals and the sole reason i mentioned them.

heh, omar i said it might improve me, but i could just be taking it to learn how to really hurt people. not that i am.
