I just finished, "The Last Wish," by Andrej Sapkowski. He's a Polish author and his series of books inspired the Witcher video game. I haven't played the game yet (I'm waiting to get a new computer before I do ( ... )

Let me correct myself. It wasn't that he was re-telling old fairy tales that caught me, it was how he was re-telling them. John recently posted a podcast on his journal about how he ran an L5R game for some friends years ago and he exchanged the Clans that each Thunder was from.

This is sort of what the author did with these tales. Each story held onto the spirit, the themes, of what the tale was about, but he threw away all the rest and built his own story on top of it creating a compelling new story that became as poignant and fresh as those stories must have been when they were first told back in the dark ages of man's mind.
