Sweet new machine... too bad they didn't give you a slick laptop. 1TB of user space... now what the hell are you going to stuff in there anyway? Hell, I ALMOST have 1TB of total storage here in the basement, and well, 95% of what I have on my drives SHOULD NOT be stored on a company server! ;-)
So how is the whole "defining your own role" part working out? I knew that that could either be awesome, or really crappy, depending on how things played out and how much freedom you're actually given. Hope it's working?

I didn't want a laptop. Laptop==travel in corporate-speak. I will get to travel- quarterly, it's looking, to the mothership (Seattle) and to our contract manufacturer (currently in Colorado, but we're sourcing a new CM in Toronto that's looking promising), but typically only director-level and higher and salescritters get laptops. I get the engineering level of disk space because I deal with electrical layouts like gerbers and ASIC files for custom PCBs, and those suckers are huge.
No comment yet on the defining-the-role part; we're all still getting used to each other, and I'm not stupid enough to push too hard right away. Let them get used to me and how I work, *then* start in with suggestions.

my housemate got a new job that she hates and ended up leaving after a month and got another job, so I'm glad to hear that you aren't suffering
