Quick question for my flist...

Jul 29, 2008 16:11

Middle Daughter wants to replace her (admittedly cheap) flat iron so that she can iron away her gorgeous curls.

Anyone have any suggestions? If it's possible, I'd rather we not spend more than $80.

TIA...

ETA Dude ~ two posts in as many days. Whoa!

I use the Global Beauty ceramic iron. It's wonderful, and I've not had any problems with it. However, it's around $100.00. The Chi ceramic iron is supposed to be good too (although I've never used it), and I think it's about $70.00.

Thank you. I'm beginning to think I may have to apply the crowbar to the wallet and fork over more than I was thinking. Her hair is halfway down her back and is as thick as cement, which is why the cheap ones don't work for her.

~nods~ Then I'd really recommend the Global Beauty iron. My hair is thick and coarse (you remember) and is fairly long, so I sympathize with her.

If she's going to do it, get her something good or it will be heat damage and split ends and no straight shiny hair to show for it. GHDs plus the heat protection spray that GHD produce (use sparingly and concentrate on the ends). They're expensive but you may as well fork out now or you'll be buying another... and another... And they last for years and have a good guarentee too.

I was horrified when the boyf's little sisters got GHDs because they were expensive, but then I tried them...

Yeah, expensive. Still, there is something to the "you get what you pay for" thing...

Thanks for chiming in!

The get what you pay for thing is particularly fierce when it comes to straightening irons, sadly. There are so many that are just shit!

No worries. I watched boyf's little sisters go through the begging and pleading stage following hair disappointment (there is an eight year gap between him and the oldest so they were only 14 and 12 when we started going out). Your post brought a wry smile to my face.

My cousin's kid uses a Chi ceramic iron. My sister got it for her from a friend who is a beautician. My cousin's kid has thick wavy hair (don't know why she wants to straighten it; kids, go figure) and says it works really well. And, I have seen her after using it and her hair is really straight after usage and not dry looking (of course her hair is just really wavy, not super curly). Hope that helps.

I've seen Chis on several "recommended" lists, but I'm always suspicious that the folks recommending are somehow linked to the stuff they're rec'ing. RL recs like yours are what I like.

Thanks for your input!

Yeah, that is why my sister went to her friend who is a beautician and had her get one. My sister and I have never wanted, or in my sister's case never needed, a straightening iron. We wouldn't know what was true and what was bull. Even then, my sister was worried until my cousin's kid tried it out. She has been using it for a little over a year now. Glad to be of help.

I think ceramic ones are good ones... and also I like the ones that you can do wet/dry with.

Ceramic I think does less damage...

Still here, but as the girls get older, my free time seems to get rarer.

How IS that???
