Professor Wolfe has kindly offered to tutor Mary Lennox in mathematics. And they do, in fact, spend most of the time allotted to the tutoring sessions talking about math. It is a subject in which Mary earnestly wishes to excel, and her scores have improved tremendously.

Just not quite all of the time.

Galadan's voice, when he speaks, is very dry.

"I daresay my sort of magic, if you will, has little enough to do with anything as harmless as sparkles."

He knew he should have killed that dog.

"It does seem to have caused no little amount of havoc since your arrival here, however."

Well 'their' arrival, but Galadan is not in the habit of letting things like that slip out.

"I have not done anything to it!" protests Mary. "And it was acting quite as a usual dog would act last semester, when I was here - so far as I know, at least. Though I do not have much experience with dogs of that size and lack of intelligence."
