Chapter 1: Home at Eleven
June 14, 2015 --
Blaine made his way to the bar, alone, just like every other night he came here. He was very familiar with the bartender. They've had many discussions, most of which he didn't remember. Kurt thought he was out with friends, but his only friend has been scotch on the rocks. He wasn't some crazy alcoholic, but it was the only thing, lately, that made him feel good.
Blaine didn't know what has become of his relationship with Kurt. He feels so ashamed of pushing him away, but with school and work, everything has been extremely overwhelming. Working full-time as a waiter had taken quite a toll on his grades. Getting fired took a bigger toll. Admitting this to Kurt nearly broke him. Out of his four classes that he was taking, he was failing one, and barely passing the others. He couldn't sleep, and since March, Kurt refused to make love to him for reasons he was sure had to do with him forgetting their anniversary a few months prior. Blaine did not want to tell him about everything that had been going on, because Kurt had enough of his own problems to deal with; Blaine, himself, being one of them.
After only two rounds, and it approaching eleven o'clock, Blaine decided to head home. Kurt, the man he's loved for years, wanted him to be home, and he was tired of letting him down. As he waited in the taxi, he reflected on their relationship. The moment he realized his feelings for Kurt, he was never more terrified and sure of himself in his life. He still got mocked for having this epiphany while supporting his friend, singing about a dead bird, of all things. He smiled every time he thought of their first kiss; how he was worried that Kurt no longer felt the same way, until his hand reached his cheek and deepened their kiss. When they sang together in front of hundreds of people, he never saw Kurt so happy. He realized he was in love with Kurt during prom when he told him that nobody can touch what they have. And when he finally told Kurt he loved him; it was the easiest thing to have ever left his lips. Finally, the cab stopped outside of his apartment.
Blaine opened the door quietly. Kurt was usually asleep by this time, and he didn't want to startle him. He heard his lover's voice in the dim lit kitchen. As he approached, he heard another voice, unfamiliar to him. A man. His heart was in his stomach when he heard the clink of champagne glasses, and soft flirty whispers. Blaine felt gravity pushing him down, but he managed to hold himself together when he looked into the kitchen. Kurt was leaning against the island with a tall blonde, very attractive man, standing uncomfortably close to him. The man was complimenting him on his clothes, and did Kurt just blush? Kurt only blushed for him. Damn it, he couldn't take this.
"I didn't expect company tonight." Both of them jumped several feet in the air, while Kurt moved as far as he humanly could from the man who was hovering over him.
"Blaine! Your home early. I thought you said you were coming home at," he trailed off, looking at the clock, " eleven", he whispered.
"On the dot, just as I promised!" Blaine sounded chipper and unfazed, but Kurt knew this wasn't going to end well. At all. "Let's bring our guest into the living room for a little chat, shall we?"
"Actually, I was about to --" the stranger mumbled, wanting, no, needing to leave, as if his life depended on it.
"Don't be silly, have a seat." Blaine tapped the sofa opposite of him, gesturing both of the boys to sit down. They hesitantly did as they were told.
He took a long look at the stranger invading his and Kurt's relationship. He looked a few years older than him. His waist was kind of slim but, solely based on the way his white V-neck T-shirt fit snugly against his chest and arms, it was clear that the man worked out. His eyes were absolutely spell inducing; they were the lightest shade of blue he had ever seen. It was quite intimidating looking directly at him, because it felt like he was looking into his soul. Blaine knew even a blind man would do a double take of the nervous underwear model awaiting his fate in front of him.
But hell, Blaine didn't care if it was Danny DeVito or Brad Pitt flirting up against Kurt in his own home. The anger that was boiling in his veins only intensified when his boyfriend -- HIS boyfriend, dammit -- mouthed "so sorry" and apologetically brushed this God damn intruder's shoulder right in front of him. But Blaine was not going to let his anger show, because that's what he's practiced his entire life, and that's what he was going to do now. Blaine knew that Kurt knew how he was seething with rage, more than he's ever felt. He was also sure that his boyfriend, by now, understood how passive aggressive he could be. In some cases, it would be uncalled for, but this was not one of those cases. He took a few deep breaths, and began speaking in a very controlled manner.
"So, what's your name and what brings you here today?" He asked the blonde in an interview-like fashion. The stranger shifted uncomfortably on the couch. Blaine looked down, and oh. Dear God, this was going to be weird. But damn, Blaine felt, he was up against some serious competition.
"I'm Cody Elliott. I was just here because your, um..."
"boyfriend." Blaine firmly stated, while glancing over at Kurt, who was losing his eyes and massaging his temples. He knew where this was going.
"Right, your boyfriend, he-he invited me over for dinner, and we, um, talked." Cody Elliott. That name definitely rang a few thousand bells. The same Cody Elliott in Kurt's French class. The same Cody Elliott that Kurt said he was studying with at the library at odd hours of the evening. The same Cody Elliott that Kurt said was straight.
"Cody Elliott! Kurt has told me so much about you," Blaine put on a winning smile. He looked at the blonde, all the while seeing, in the corner of his eye, Kurt shake his head in his hands, "so do you have a girlfriend?" With that question, Kurt opened his eyes in horror, and glared at his boyfriend in anger and in plea. Cody looked at Kurt completely dumbfounded by the question.
"I think we've had enough, don't you Blaine?" Kurt jumped to his feet, looking two shades more pale than he did before his friend's deposition. He practically shoved him out the door, getting him as far away from this mess as possible.
Once the door finally shut, it took all of Kurt's strength to turn around and face the distraught boy. When he did meet his boyfriend's gaze, he saw pain. He has never seen Blaine look so broken in the years they've been together. "Blaine, I..." he was hoping for him to interrupt, but the man who he's been in love with for years just looked into his eyes, patiently waiting for him to explain himself. "I don't know what to say."
