i think a lot of bento-packers use whatever is handy in their kitchen. a big feature is stuff that is already made - like leftovers from dinner, a big batch of a particular dish you made over the weekend, etc. it's not that bad! you should try it! ;)

how in the world do you pour the sauce into a little tiny bottle like that??

the secret is not in pouring, but in sucking! you squeeze the empty bottle, stick the opening into the sauce and it gets sucked inside. then you can squeeze out the rest of the air and do it again. ;)

ingenious. i love it!

i'm still not fully convinced that you are able to make all these bentos while toiling away at work!

ha ha! i am making these bentos because i toil away at work. or else i would faint from hunger by the time i got home. today's really was a quickie. we got to work by 8:30! (although i am in glasses and a ponytail and look like a total nerd)

Very true. Chinatown is nearby, but I am way too lazy in the winter!

Yum! =9 That rice looks like it's got the perfect sticky consistency. :)

Yay for the spam musubi! ♥

double yay!!

(this batch of spam musubi came out extra special. i used the same recipe as in the memories/recipes link, but left out the furikake and sandwiched the spam instead of laying it on top. i also used a smidge less vinegar in the rice.)

The way you just described your spam musubi is the way I usually make it. I don't use furikake (although it's yummy stuff!), 'cause I figure the saltiness of the spam gives enough flavor. And I only use a teensy amount of vinegar in the rice because I'm not a big fan of strong vinegar tastes. :D But I always sandwich the spam between the rice and then wrap it in the nori. Just seems to stay together better for me when I do it that way. ^__^

Gosh, now I feel like making some spam musubi this week! =9

Do it! And I love your food pictures. Those spritzer cookies are so adorable! How do you make them? Are they tasty? They look fabulous!

(This is mylunch using my personal, non-bento login.)

This is a little scary. My lunch for today, which I have not yet posted on my site, includes one of my first batch ever of spam musubi. Do we share a brain cell or something?

Seriously? Wow! :D

How do you like your musubi? Everybody seems to have their own way of doing it.

I sliced the Spam thin - 1/4" - and fried it in a sort of teriyaki-ish mexture of soy sauce, mirin, and sugar. Laid it on top of a 1" thick brick of rice and wrapped it with a belt of nori. I used plain rice, as I couldn't imagine what vinegary sushi rice and Spam would taste like together.

I made some bricks the size of a complete slice, and some that were more sushi-sized, 1/3 slabs. They were about the size of dominoes. I like the smaller ones better, as I prefer to take little bites, and you can't pick up one of those cinderblock-sized musubi with chopsticks! I also have sliced them similar to how you slice rolls of sushi into individual pieces, and will probably put that in tomorrow's bento box.

BTW, I've got a takoyaki pan and as soon as I get a better handle on the turnin' technique I'll be posting a recipe for that too! :D

Oh nice! The only takoyaki I've tried is from the freezer section, and I wasn't a huge fan. I am hoping it is because it was a bad brand.

I really want to try taiyaki. But then I would have to have a taiyaki pan to do that. :X
