Basically he did 60+ hour weeks in the lab with the professor in charge (the professor is the second author listed & the guy who owns the contact e-mail) and did ALL of the experiment work and writing the paper etc. That's how he got it. There were a few other guys assisting (and the original paper has four authors listed for some reason?) but basically he did all of it.
That's way, way awesome. Even more awesome that he got credited as primary author! (Over here, a student would never get that kind of credit, even if they did 99.9% of the work, because hierarchy dictates that all professors be listed first). And it's in the bloody *Science* journal!
Exactly! Even he explained that often the professors often take first authorship credit in light of the fact that it's their project, regardless of who does the work -- my brother impressed this professor that much that he yielded it to my brother. Because my brother did THAT much work on it. I think my brother even came up with the idea for the specific line of research/experiments but I can't remember for sure.
My brother was actively recruited by both MIT and CalTech, among several other schools. He could basically pick and choose where to go based upon what they were offering him, rather than the other way around.
There's quite a bit of sibling pride going on here. :)

(OMFG, how did he get primary author for undergrad research though? SO JEALOUS!)
