Disney Infinity 3.0, now with added Star Wars

Jan 02, 2016 11:54

I got my daughter Disney Infinity 3.0 for Christmas, prompted by extensive pleading.

As with version 2.0, I don't think this is a great value-for-money proposition; the various starter kits only give you one Play Set campaign unlocked (far short of the three you got with v1.0) and you have to buy the rest à la carte. This game can hit parents' ( Read more... )

I've been vaguely considering either DI or LEGO Dimensions for myself, but cost and my desire to limit the accumulation of additional physical items (I already have too much clutter!) are keeping me safe so far.

I should go back and replay the older LEGO games on my PS3; it's been long enough that I won't remember all the tricks and hidden whatnots.

Speaking as an adult, the aspect of DI that entertains me the most is building my own games/worlds in the Toy Box, which as of v2.0 can be amazingly full-featured games if you put some effort into it, but there may well be cheaper things that scratch that itch (eg Minecraft). Lego is releasing their Minecraft-esque Lego Worlds next year.

Jorie likes building surreal environments in the Toy Box and just sort of hanging out there. She had one recently in 2.0 that was mostly a vast structure made of hundreds of bubbling hot tubs.

There was one big problem with Lego Star Wars, which was that it refused to split the screen, so if you're playing it two-player you spend much of your time fighting the camera.

Lego Harry Potter largely fixed that with an ingenious adaptive mechanic that splits the screen along a diagonal as the player characters become too separated from one another to get them in the same shot. This leads to a lot less yelling and crying when we play Lego Harry Potter.

Yeah, the older games had definite issues with couch co-op; the dynamic split-screen came in around LEGO Indiana Jones 2 (IIRC, and Giant Bomb thinks so too).

The new Marvel content coming in the spring seems to be just a multiplayer fighting game. Maybe not our speed.

...Somewhat boggled that the "Hall of Galactic Heroes" area that shows off your Star Wars-related figures actually leaves out pedestals for "The Force Awakens" characters. I assume that that was because manifesting any trace of TFA content prior to the movie release was verboten, and they'll probably have a patch at some point that adds the spots (there is room for them).

Jorie eventually got the "Inside Out" playset; this is a surprise--it's an old-school 2D platformer! Fun, and not nearly as hard as the classic ones like Super Mario Bros., but this isn't Jorie's favorite kind of game.
