A cliched answer for a cliched question

Instead of talking more about London, I'm going to simply give an answer to a question that I have loved making fun of since I first heard of it two years back...

Q: Forest or river?

A: To anyone who knows me at all, this is no surprise, but I am going to pick river for a number of reasons. First of all, I am drawn to water of all types: I ( Read more... )

I love seeing this question because of the different ways people respond to it.

I would have picked river also, because as The Hunger Games taught me, going to a source of water helps greatly in your chances of survival. You'll die of dehydration before hunger. Plus, animals would be congregating near the river (or a water source) to drink water so you'd have a higher chance of finding food; berries and fruit will be ripest close to a water source as well, and you can't argue with thousands of years of civilizations having sprung up near rivers. And I would pick rivers over other water sources because the constant movement means the water is fresh and not stagnant, and it'll be freshwater, not seawater, which is great for drinking ( ... )

Conversely, I chose forest in this scenario because, to me, forestry is a place of solitude and hiding, whereas main sources of water like lakes and rivers bring to mind an image of an open, populated area. As a bit of an agouraphobe, the idea is unnerving.
Now, if it were a swamp or a quiet brook however, I'd head that way.

I think I remember being shocked by you choosing forest back in 2011 but your reasoning makes perfect sense! (Interestingly, this is an area where you have the exact opposite taste from me; I'm uncomfortable in small spaces where I have no room to move! For example, my shower right now is barely 2' x 2' and I feel like I'm in PRISON whenever I enter...)

Forest. River is a water element unadoptable for human beings. I can’t breathe it. When I swim, I’m extremely vulnerable and clumsy in it. I don’t cherish the thought of flailing on the surface when any fishy with electric charge or sharp teeth can swim up and zap me. The survival odds are better in the forest where I have best control over my body and movement.

Also, since out of all reasons somehow I’ve gotten on the war vibe. Forest is all for chaos and mischief; laying traps on unsuspecting suckers, disappearing when you don’t want to be seen. I think the river is a little too open for these sort of shenanigans.

I guess in the water I feel the prey and in the forest the hunter. >.>

I'm totally late to this party whereas I'm usually punctual but better late than never. The funny thing is that when I saw you post this, I was all ready to answer "ice". In fact, each time you ask this question around HiH I always think of ice and my reasoning for it. But I've completely changed my mind while I was thinking about how to answer this post.

I'll say forest. Whereas you see the forest being unchanging as a negative thing, I see it in a somewhat different light. I see the forest as being unwavering and being lasting. It'll change over time, as people and nature meddle about with it but left to it's own device a forest is really tough and lasting. I like the idea of something that isn't going to be overall drastically different. I do want to learn and grow up, but I don't want to be different. I just want to be more of me...and forests are kinda like that. At the same time, a forest isn't uniform when you get right in the middle of it. There might be more than one type of tree growing, they'll be flowers and other things ( ... )
