The Doctor in Whereverland

He sighed softly, and turned the stem of his glass in his fingers, the banana daquiri almost untouched. It had seemed like a good idea at the time, but...

Perhaps not.

The fact of the matter was, he missed Rose. Terribly. And Donna had had a point - the same one made by so many people over the years.

Still.

I put down the bottle of vodka for him.

He looks like one who could use it and here, it's cheap enough.

I sit.

"You say I'm human, but you don't know what I am?"

An Other. Not just any other but, since Kostya's little attempt, an Other without limit.

"Mmm. Not exactly," he admits. "You're a bit different, I can tell that much, and clearly not from the same universe I am, but you always have to be careful of alternate universes."

A sad note creeps into his voice again at that. His Rose is stuck in an alternate universe now, and if he wants to keep them both intact, he'll never see her again.

He's not worth correcting.

"If you're not going to drink it, I will."

And I sit down, taking the bottle again.

"What's got you down?"

"I lost a friend of mine," he admits. "She's not dead, oh no, far from that, but she's in another universe now, and there's no way I can get to her without, you know, tearing the fabric of space and time asunder."

"Are you so sure of that?" I ask, thinking only after that I might have thought this through a little more before saying it. All this power since Kostya's terrible mistake...

And I want to use it. I want to use these new interventions. Where I can really USE them.

"There are some doors that are locked in one way but... open elsewhere."

He shakes his head.

"Positive. Believe me, I know about these things. Besides, the rift between the universes? It's all sealed off now, like it never was. And a good thing, too."

If he says it often enough, he'll have himself convinced. It just might take a century or two.

"And do you know of the Gloom?" I ask, realizing I shouldn't.

"Well, that depends entirely on what you mean by 'the Gloom,'" the Doctor replies. "I'm not familiar with that particular bit of terminology."

I held up a hand and slipped into the first level of the Gloom. Where once there was a faint bit of effort, it was now as breathing. As were the second and third layers, now.

"Ohhhhh. I see what you mean. I try not to deal with transphasic dimensions if I don't have to," he says. "Messy business, that. I'll stick with the normal six, thanks."

I dip down into the second and third levels. I'm curious if he can still see.

The Doctor raises an eyebrow as he 'watches.'

'Seeing' isn't exactly the operative term when you're looking at things like that, but there is no word outside of Gallifreyan to accurately describe the senses he's using.

"It goes deeper."

"Wouldn't surprise me," the Doctor replies. "Mind coming back? I kind of... Well, I literally can't tell you what it feels like, but imagine having your eyes crossed in four dimensions. It's kind of like that."

And rising is a little like flying until I step into the real world.

And down some vodka.
