photos from steampunk picnic August 2nd

Because of rain, our 'picnic' was held indoors, in liu_xing's lovely Victorian townhouse. There was a lovely spread, most of which was prepared by liu_xing and serindrana, laid out in the parlor. I was a little late arriving because I had class in the morning, which precluded me going to the Time Traveler's Picnic. After enjoying some authentic ( Read more... )

sweet! Everyone is lovely. Was it a ladies only event?

No, just coincidence. I suppose all the gents were up at the Time Traveler's picnic. As the only one in trousers, I filled in as best I could!

Though I truly love your outfits, I can't help but feel they lack a certain "umph" to make you ladies shine brighter then you do.
It might be that you need more detail or something uniquely "you",
maybe some texture instead of patterning, or gadgets.
Sometimes just goggles don't do the trick, I feel there should be a reason for them if you have them as an accessory.

I'm certainly still working on my outfit, so the recommendations should be helpful! I had a few accessories that made sense, but they didn't turn up in pictures - steamed-up kanzashi, a belt of a little sundial and some keys, etc. But thank you. :D

I 100% agree that goggles on the head has become the biggest steampunk cliche out there...but sometimes you just gotta do it -.^ Usually I wear my gear eye but it was sooo hot, eww! If it makes any sense, I fancied myself a time traveler...don't want to get specks of time-dust in my eyes?

I agree with you, however. I have lots of steampunk elements but they don't all necessarily fit together to add that "umph". Eventually I'll get it!

Oh, I just hate getting dressed up when it's hot, plus I'm new to this so I don't have too many outfits. This was my first attempt at masculine attire. I have to admit I'm not a big fan of draping myself with gadgets. I don't fancy myself an inventor or even an explorer. In these photos I was aiming to look like a bit of a rogue. I'm just not a gadget-y person, I guess.

Anyway when the weather cools down, my outfits will be much improved but for now, it's no fun to stand on a 108-degree subway platform draped in velvet.

Question for liu_xing! Is that the bustle skirt from fanplusfriend by any chance? All the photos are of you from the front so I can't be for sure but I was debating buying that skirt in either a brown or the striped so how do you like it? Does it fit and work well? Are you wearing a petticoat there or is it naturally poofy like that? Sorry to poke you with questions but you're the first one I saw in that skirt!

And as for everyone else, you look wonderful. I especially love liu_xing's outfit for some reason. It's so simple but it works so well. And mlleviolet, those pants look so good on you. So sad I missed it. Oh why can't I be in two places at once? Pfft! The mad scientists on here need to work on fixing that issue!

Yes, it is! I adore that skirt! It has about three layers and is poofy just by the fabric they use. It's nice and heavy but still has a flow to it. The bustle can be raised and lowered by four strings at the back. It's not as bustle-y as I wanted it to be, but still like it a lot.

Also, thank you :)

Totally meant to wear them with geta but the straps on my geta made my feet look gigantic. Alas! : )

Actually, do you know where I can get a pair of Mary Janes? If I owned a pair of those, the sandals would go poof!

I found these LifeStride Mary Janes at Burlington Coat factory for $20. It's hard to find Mary Jane flats. I'd prefer a pair with a rounder toe like children's Buster Browns but I'll probably get those LifeStrides for work.
