The Art of Selecting and Signing Up for Intercon Games (The Lily Way)

Nov 04, 2015 14:59

I remember there was a discussion on the Intercon Facebook community, last year, on how people go about selecting and signing up for games. This is my process, for the edification of others and proof of my own dorkery ( Read more... )

Your process is similar to mine! Mine also involves a hefty dose of costuming consideration (what sounds like the most fun/possible for me to actually produce and produce well) and also "how disappointed will I be if I have to pick from other stuff in this slot?" and "how fast is this likely to fill".

Costuming with masks is a toughy -- I'm always happy to brainstorm ideas with people.

Yeah, I'm not sure how to even begin quantifying "what will I think fill up fastest," outside of the super incredibly obvious, like FTiP. I just eyeball that, and keep an ear out, I guess.

Do you happen to have any tips for masks worn with glasses? Always Waltz is my third choice for that slot, so it may not come up, but I can see that being a handy thing to know in general. My best idea so far is "hang colorful cloth from earpieces/nose bridge, to simulate mask.

That surprises me. I don't feel sure about how fast FTiP will fill (probably will fill very fast, though) but I think Rabbit Run is likely to go in the blink of an eye because it's gotten absurdly good press. I mean, I've never seen so much fanfiction written about a LARP. That strikes me as a really good sign ( ... )

I think my choice between which of those two to sign up for did boil down to I have more backup choices on Saturday night. I can definitely see Rabbit Run going in a flash. It looks so cool!

I like the idea of cutting out a mask to fit around the glasses. That's another potential idea. If I can find a mask pattern, print it out on stiff paper and mess around with it, maybe...

Small warning that I would expect Rabbit Run to fill super fast.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. It looks freaking awesome, and I know lots of people (myself included) are really excited about it. I'm basically playing the 'I have more backup options Saturday night' roulette.

The most interesting thing here is that a) I think all of these games are solid, and b) my preferred choice in each slot is not on your priority list. The Saturday night game I'd have preferred to play if Platform 6 had been in another slot is not on your priority list either (Together Again). My first round choice is Pub Crawl. I tend to pick games via a combination of who's writing them, how interesting the blurb is, and what people who have similar tastes to mine recommend. Anything by you and/or Tory, or by Alleged Entertainment, is in the first category; Space Station Omega, my Saturday morning pick, is in the second (as is Devil to Pay, except I've already played); Together Again is in the third. Pub Crawl is in the intersection of the first two, and also feels to me like the sort of game that's going to fill 60 seconds after signups open.
