This has not been a good year for cons, has it? I feel really bad for anyone who’s running one these days. One thing that really hit me about the WisCon situation is that I distinctly remember seeing comments following theferret’s little mess that said something to the effect of, “Well, at least Wiscon is safe...” I have a few more thoughts on this, but ( Read more... )

What happened to Wiscon?

It's hard to find a succinct version, but basically a person attended WisCon, took pictures of overweight, transgendered, minority and disabled persons and in some cases also their children (without getting permission and apparently in some cases after being expressly denied permission) and posted a mocking post filled with those pictures (with faces blurred but possibly nametags including names and hometowns visible) at Something Awful. Wiscon attendees discovered her post and sent her emails, etc. I have not seen any screencaps of any of these emails, but I have no trouble believing that at least some of them were hostile. She subsequently requested that SA remove the post, but by then it had been screencapped and reposted at something called SASS. There are alleged to be posts that contain her personal information and threaten her with violence and I have heard that some persons who attend UW with her have either contacted the Dean or threatened to contact the Dean. And she's been permabanned from WisCon, but pretty much ( ... )

I was about to ask oshunanat's question. Thanks for the clear-eyed summary. (And ... ugh, I hate grudgewank with a passion. I think I may just rely on your summary and steer clear of the unfunnybusiness post.)

You could skip the post itself and just skim the comments. There is further information in there that helps clarify things. But the whole thing is so yuck that yeah, maybe avoiding it altogether is not a bad idea.

1. Not for Spike, at any rate.

2. I wanted Lisa to go, just because I loathe that face she makes whenever sone criticizes her. It's like she smells dog shite or something.

3. I am VERY dubious of peanut butter mashed potatoes. Did you see the face Tom made when she mentioned them? Priceless!

4. Speaking of steak, I'm trying to talke my husband into making reservations at Tramonto's for my birthday (7-17). It's so close to where I live that it would be a crime not to go and splurge on a fab dinner.

5. I feel the same way about the show being in Chicago. Half the fun this season is recognizing the places where they go. Last night, we were all like, that's the restaurant we pass every time we go to the movies! Kick ass! (we watched it and the hotel it located in being built for what seemed like forever)

I kind of think Lisa's being kept around because of her bitchface. I guess they think it provides drama.

Tom's face about the potatoes - yes! Hilarious! He is very good with his facial expressions. You can tell just what he's thinking.

Lucky you! I'm envious of you going to Tramonto's. That place looked fabulous! I think I'll add it to my list of restaurants to eat at before I die. I've only been to Chicago a couple of times, and I never left the airport either time (Midway once and O'Hare the other time). I really need to visit there sometime. It seems like a really great city.
