"Oooh, new kid." Cess grinned and tossed the last bit of her sandwich to Santo, waving goodbye to Julian's protests, Lee's laughter and Dallas' sputterings of her helping him with his homework ( Read more... )

Damien had been standing beside the gate ever since his father's car had dropped him off--which was really not that long ago. And ever since, he'd been both appalled and interested at how normal the mutants around him were ( ... )

Cess grinned, not the least bit fazed.

"We don't really have specific dorms for boys and girls. You'll be assigned a roommate though, one of the guys, obviously." She waved briefly to someone who had called out her name before turning her attention back to him. "Sorry, uh... right. You'll likely be put on the third floor, since there are rooms there. We could go check now, if you'd like."

Curiosity. Amusement.

He tried not to look at how the light glimmered from the surface of her skin. How they bounced off in different directions, making her, indeed, glow. How her hair seemed to complement the lighting on her face, and cheeks.

And then she smiled.

Jesus. What are you doing, Damien?

He shook himself to his senses, realizing that once again, he fell to his habit of appraising the people and things around him. Looking her this time in the eyes, he focused on what she told him.

"Yes, please." He replied, and he picked up his bags, fighting the immediate instinct to hand them over. He stopped himself mid-way, and simply just sighed; relieved he had not muttered his hands' intentions.

"What's the school like? Is it like, other, normal schools?"

Cess did her best not to let the mention of the word 'normal' bother her. She'd tried calling her mom just a few days before. As usual, the phone had been put down on her before she could get so much as three words through ( ... )

"Thanks for the offer, but I can manage." He smiled earnestly, before stopping in his tracks.

"Uhm. You see, that's the thing..." His voice trailed off.

"I'm not quite sure about what my power is." He whispered, sounding slightly embarassed, "I mean, I know how to call on it, and I know what it does... But I'm not exactly sure what it is."

He hadn't noticed, but he'd bee gripping at his bags handles a wee bit too tightly.

"Ha. Ha. I must be silly, aren't I? What kind of mutant doesn't know his own powers." He ended with an exaggerated sigh, and looked onward. "Oh. I'm sorry. What was your name again?"

"It's Cess," Manners, Kincaid. "Sorry. I tend to forget to do that." She eyed the baggage again. "You sure? I really don't mind, you know. I'm here to help."

She kept her hands open in case he conceded.

"As for your powers, I think Tessa can help you with that. She did that for my teammate, Lee and helped her best friend, Ellie with figuring out how to control hers."

She paused, considered: "How do you call on it? And... uh... since you've called on it -- what's it done?"

She just needed a general idea. When you spent a lot of time around mutants, it was easy figuring out which category a student fell into.

He smiled politely, a bit awkward in a few places, and it seemed like one that a person might have been practicing in front of the mirror ( ... )

She nodded, taking it all in, and smiled despite the odd niggling feeling in the pit of her stomach. She was a Hellion, and ontop of that, she wasn't dumb. Training with Wolverine had taught her a lot of things, including knowing how to filter out unfounded preconceptions to leave behind an instinct she could trust.

"Could be touch-triggered tepe -- telepathy." For a moment she considered something, the image of the Cuckoos coming to mind before she brushed it away lest the boy was a mind-reader too.

"We'd have to get you to the prof then. And Dr. Grey," she paused before adding: "And probably Miss Frost."

"Touch triggered telepathy." He repeated. "I like the sound of that."

As he followed her around, he shifted his hold on the bags. They'd walked quite a while and was wondering when they might reach the rooms.

"Frost?" he chuckled, attempting to make small talk. "That's a 'cool' name."

"What's her power? Does she have some sort of freeze-ray?"

She had to laugh at the pun. But freeze-ray? C'mon.

"It's her real name. Emma Frost. Haven't you ever heard of Frost Enterprises?" It would surprise her he hadn't. He looked the part of the rich-kid. "She's a telepath, and my squad's adviser. You don't want to cross her the wrong way."

She led him up to the floor where the rooms were sectioned off for the kids and wove her upper-body through the groups of bodies standing in pairs or more, saying hi's, hello's and excuse-me's to several individuals. When she reached the bulletin board, she found his name and smiled, retracting to her lower-body to turn and face him.

"You're rooming with Jay," she said with a smile. "Come on this way." Curling her fingers around one sleeved wrist, she let her other hand relieve him of one bag before pulling him down one corridor.
