I decided I needed some extra simspiration with my prompts, so I'm trying to use some of the prompts that didn't make it on to my card in addition to the ones that did. It gives me a little extra boost and it lets me use more of the prompts people were so nice to give me.
Prompt: "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." (Thomas Jefferson) Bonus Prompt: "Falling asleep in class" Word Count: 539 Rating/ Warnings: G / None Story: Arrendale Heights Spoilers: Mildly spoilerish as it pertains to things that are happening / going to happen, but nothing very specific is given away (except one minor point that was going to be in the previous episode, but I left out) Notes: My first thought was to use this for "Penelope's Journey," because it is very relevant to what's going on in the current installment I'm working on, but when I saw the "Falling asleep in class" prompt, I couldn't help combining the two in a lighter take on the theme.
[Read more . . .] Meghan leaned her head against her hand. Her elbow propped up against the desk was the only think keeping her head from resting directly down on the desk itself. Her eyelids were getting heavy and she had to will herself to keep them open. She blinked and blinked again, then stretched her neck and sighed. She was on the verge of giving up any effort at all to stay awake, but she’d already been called out twice this week for not paying attention in class. One more time and she was afraid she’d be asked to stay after class, which was the absolute last thing she wanted. She wanted nothing more than to get out of her as soon as possible. Why did U.S. History have to be so . . . incredibly . . . boring? The last of her will to keep herself awake was about to run out when she was saved by the bell. The sudden sound of it had her practically jumping out of her seat. Suddenly, miraculously, all of her overwhelming tiredness was gone and she was energetically gathering her things and hurrying toward the door. She was already in the hallway, savoring a moment of long awaited freedom before she thought to wait for her cousin. “Ugh,” she muttered as Judith approached. “Why does it always feel like that class lasts for like three hours?” Judith just shrugged. “Seriously? Who cares about what happened a million years ago anyway? I mean, really, all that stuff about trees and blood and whatever? What the heck?” “’The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants?’” Judith asked. “It means - “ “Yeah, yeah. I know,” she waved off the explanation. “I cannot believe you honestly remembered that word for word. You are such a nerd.” “No, I just stay awake in class,” Judith replied flatly. “You should try it sometime.” “Hey, give me something relevant to my life. That would be worth staying awake for.” As they walked on they passed by Julian who was standing with Melissa and the other snobby senior girls. Meghan and the girls exchanged heated glances as the two freshman walked past. “Don’t tell me you’re still at war with them,” Judith said with a roll of her eyes. “You haven’t given up on that ridiculous plan of yours yet?” “You’d better believe I am and it’s still on. They think they can dictate where I, or anyone else, can and cannot sit in the cafeteria and they think they can block me from the cheerleading squad, even though I was the best one at the freshman tryouts? I’m going to knock them off their pedestals before this school year is over, no matter what it takes. Just watch and wait.” “And Julian?” Meghan frowned. She didn’t like getting Julian involved, but she didn’t really believe he would get hurt in all this, not really. Of course, Judith had a different view of the matter. Meghan just shrugged and ignored the question. “It’s going to work out, you’ll see.” As Meghan turned to go down another hallway to her next class, Judith muttered under her breath, “No, not relevant at all.”
