True Blood

I've been meaning to make a post about the new HBO series "True Blood". For those not in the know, it's a vampire series based on the "Sookie Stackhouse" books by Charlaine Harris. So far only one episode has aired, but I also caught the second episode online.

Unfortunately, they're already crying over not enough viewers. My god, is there no one ( Read more... )

Aw, I'm sad to hear that the viewing stats were disappointing. :( From what I've seen, a lot of people seem put-off by the excessive nudity. I do think they went a little overboard in that aspect, but I'm still going to keep watching (or rather, downloading, since I don't have HBO). Man, and I really wanted another vampire TV series to do well...

I hadn't heard of anyone being put off by the nudity. Were these fans of the whole "Twilight" phenomena? I haven't read the books, but I understand they're pretty sex-less.

Oh, no, definitely not Twilighters. (And yeah, the series is quite sexless. The last book is full of fade-to-blacks.) I don't think it was the nudity so much as the fact that they could have gotten the point across without being so graphic, which I do agree with, actually. I do understand why they added in the scenes, though.

I guess I'm not pulled either way. I don't think the graphic nudity was too much, but I don't think it's a great necessity either.

I guess it kinda "fits" my idea of HBO/Showtime shows. Shows like:

Sex and The City
Queer as Folk
Big Love
Californication

Even the more explicit stuff like "Real Sex" and "Red Shoe Diaries".

And I'm past the age where watching something more explicit makes me uncomfortable.

I've heard good things from people like you who have a clue. Bad things from reviewers who don't have a clue. But though I would like to see it, I wouldn't pay an extra dime to cable company for HBO. That's the biggest problem for pay networks. Blood Ties, which was great, wasn't on the right network. Unfortunately.

I think it's worth paying for networks like HBO and Showtime. They really do put out material a cut above the rest. And I like that they don't have to cut for language, or nudity, or anything.

I think this has the potential to be better than "Blood Ties". Less "monster of the week" style, more continuing story style.
