One of the best books I read last year was The Secret Life of BeesI just saw an ad for a movie version of it, and at first, I was horrified. It's starring Dakota Fanning. I don't know if anything good could star Dakota Fanning, but it seems pretty unlikely. Even if it starts with great material. Then I noted the rest of the cast: Queen Latifah ( Read more... )

I've read the book. I'm not sure that I'll see the movie until other brave souls have seen it and let me know it's ok. It's the sort of story that unless handled really well in movie form ends up being worse than the worst Lifetime movie ever.

Well said!

Yeah, at least waiting for some reviews would probably be a good idea.

I loved The Secret Life of Bees, but I know what you mean about books and movies. One of the few times I enjoyed both was The English Patient (yes, all you English Patient haters, can laugh now) mostly b/c the story was roughly the same, but the focus was on different characters and different times in the story, so it almost had a parallel lives feeling to it.
For me too, the key is reading the book first. I read books to find out what happens next and I see movies to be entertained or moved. If I already know what happens in a book, I really have to force myself to finish it. If I see a movie and I know what happens I can still be entertained.
