Weddings

At some point, I think weddings are just inconsiderate. My friend is getting married in South Dakota of all places in 6 weeks and I pretty much have to go. So that means a $400 plane ticket (because who flies to South Dakota?) Then I have to rent a tux probably because I'm going to be an usher. $100 more. The bachelor party starts on Friday morning ( Read more... )

Hi, it's roxy.

I just told my friend from Montana that I can't go to her wedding. I decided it wasn't worth the money.

When I first heard that she got engaged, I was hoping to be a bridesmaid because we used to be really close. Then she said she isn't having bridesmaids, which is also cool because bridesmaids' dresses suck. I was still looking forward to going.

But then I realized how much it would cost: $600 plane ticket + $200 hotel stay + $50 present + $100 in incidentals = $950

It made me start to think about how little I have enjoyed the last few times seeing her and how we don't talk much anymore. I realized that I wouldn't even have a good time at the wedding either, because I don't know any of her family or friends, and (like I said previously) we don't really have much fun together anymore. And I decided, screw it, I am not spending two weeks pay on a wedding that I won't even have much fun at.

But you are kind of screwed since you're an usher. Too bad. You'll probably be happy you went after the fact.

Having already had my own wedding... I agree. And just think, you have to pay all of that and you aren't even the one renting the hall, or buying the gown, or decorating or supplying food or any of that crap. Weddings are great parties... but personally, I'd rather have just an informal party and wear my jeans and get drunk and laugh.

When T and I get married we're eloping and then we'll have like a BBQ or something later. We've already discussed it and we have better things to spend our money on (and so do our friends) than one outlandish day.

One of T's friends Elizabeth is getting married this month and we were invited... but guess where they're getting married? JAMAICA! They live in San Diego, their friends live in CA too and we live in freakin WA... who can afford that? We told them we can't make it. Kinda sad.

Maybe you shouldn't go? I think he'd probably rather you didn't if it was going to put you in such a tough spot.

Laurel and I had no choice, really...either people were going to be flying to Baton Rouge, or people were going to be flying to San Francisco. We just tried to pick the cooler of the two, and understand that some people just couldn't afford to make it.

Your friend would probably understand...

You would think. But no, he actually called me several times to tell me that he really needed me there and it wouldn't be the same without me. I caved and bought a plane ticket for $525. No joke, cheapest one I could find that was at all acceptable in terms of scheduling. Oh well... I didn't need that money anyway. I should just suck it up, stop complaining, and be ok with my decision, though.

Well, that's fucked up...if it's that important that you be there he should offer to help get you there. It's crazy to put pressure on someone to come when there's that much money involved...well, it's self-absorbed anyway. He probably has a lot of shit on his mind at this point.

Eh, hopefully you end up having a great time. South Dakota is known for its... :-/
