At some point, I think weddings are just inconsiderate. My friend is getting married in South Dakota of all places in 6 weeks and I pretty much have to go. So that means a $400 plane ticket (because who flies to South Dakota?) Then I have to rent a tux probably because I'm going to be an usher. $100 more. The bachelor party starts on Friday morning

I just told my friend from Montana that I can't go to her wedding. I decided it wasn't worth the money.
When I first heard that she got engaged, I was hoping to be a bridesmaid because we used to be really close. Then she said she isn't having bridesmaids, which is also cool because bridesmaids' dresses suck. I was still looking forward to going.
But then I realized how much it would cost: $600 plane ticket + $200 hotel stay + $50 present + $100 in incidentals = $950
It made me start to think about how little I have enjoyed the last few times seeing her and how we don't talk much anymore. I realized that I wouldn't even have a good time at the wedding either, because I don't know any of her family or friends, and (like I said previously) we don't really have much fun together anymore. And I decided, screw it, I am not spending two weeks pay on a wedding that I won't even have much fun at.
But you are kind of screwed since you're an usher. Too bad. You'll probably be happy you went after the fact.

When T and I get married we're eloping and then we'll have like a BBQ or something later. We've already discussed it and we have better things to spend our money on (and so do our friends) than one outlandish day.
One of T's friends Elizabeth is getting married this month and we were invited... but guess where they're getting married? JAMAICA! They live in San Diego, their friends live in CA too and we live in freakin WA... who can afford that? We told them we can't make it. Kinda sad.

Laurel and I had no choice, really...either people were going to be flying to Baton Rouge, or people were going to be flying to San Francisco. We just tried to pick the cooler of the two, and understand that some people just couldn't afford to make it.
Your friend would probably understand...
