I'm always a little wary about making assumptions like that - the UK and Ireland are so close in so many ways, particularly when it comes to common culture and the like, but you are a different country and you do have a different native language, even if you were part of the same kingdom for a while.

I went to a little course in Hacktivism this week, which was supposed to be about beginner programming but it was just me and Carl and we both already knew that, so instead we talked about cloud computing and Kickstarter and ended with the question: "How does an artist find the people who want to be their audience but don't know it yet?" Which is such an interesting question! I am still kicking it around when I get braincells on and off.
But my own personal answer to that has been basically included what you describe above! Beautiful serendipity.
