Kickstarter quandry!

This is insane. :)

The “No Dominion” Kickstarter campaign is at just below $13K right now, with a week left to go. And I have reached the peculiar point of now being afraid to mention it much, when in fact normally one would be going OMG HOLY CRAP HOW HIGH CAN WE GO?!?!?!

Because at $15K I’ve promised another novella, but with all the little stuff ( Read more... )

kickstarter, crowdfunding, walker papers, zomg!, garrison reports, sustainable funding models

if it’s because it’s Kickstarter, or if I’ve flogged it more or if it’s been RT’d more or what

My guess is that it's these three. I'm still of the opinion that you'd've gone much, much higher if you'd been able to continue to flog it more whilst on vacation.

As for the rest, I guess that's what full-on buy-in looks like when it happens to the author. :D

You really think it'd've gone significantly higher, huh? That...blows my tiny mind, you understand. :)

Just from looking at the numbers and your momentum, yeah, I think $20k is a perfectly legit number as a possibility. You'd've definitely have had to have continued to mention it a lot to keep that level of momentum going - in a way that probably would have been uncomfortable (at least at first, although simplisticwords's comment echoes some of the exact same things that you and I have talked about). Restricted posting access meant that things really dropped off the radar a bit, but they picked back up once you started flogging it again.

*laughs out loud* $20K is a fair chunk more than any publisher has ever paid me to write a book for /them/. :)

see just how damned far this horse will go?

Definitely flog it. It's cute to see a favourite author get excited over something of their own creation, which then allows their readers to get excited about it. :)

Now you will know better with future ventures than to think "It'll never get that far!" *g* Looking forward to reading the lot. My TBR pile doesn't come anywhere near ceiling height at the moment (*whisper* that's because most of it is on Kindle and iBooks *shhhhh*).

Hm. Can you mitigate any by releasing the second novella as a self-published Kindle book three months or so after delivery to the Kickstarter participants? (I'm assuming Luna has dibs on Walker Papers stuff, but I'm not sure if the second novella has to be Walker Papers or not.) That gives people who didn't contribute at the higher levels a chance to buy in, too, but at a delay, and I'm a big believer in the concept that I (sometimes) pay hardcover prices for the sake of reading the book earlier.

Also: awesome sauce. Flog that sucker up. You're going to get a last minute boost in the last couple of days, so you're almost certainly gonna hit 15K; you might as well see how high you can push it.

In fact, the likely end-game for all the material is eventual self-published e-releases (unless my publisher decides they want a book of Walker Papers shorts; they have dibs on Jo-POV books, not Gary-or-other-POV shorter stuff). So yeah, in the end I expect it'll all come out to a more than fair wage. It's just learning curve stuff right now, really. :)

Probably, as with most things, a combination of factors. You've certainly been enthusiastic and excited about this one. Might help that there are rewards levels this time rather than just "please give what you feel like (don't worry if it's not much!) and you'll get the story." Both of those encouraged me to contribute more than I had in previous efforts, even though I'm more fond of Old Races than Walker Papers (and I've still got a lot of catching up to do where Joanie is concerned ( ... )

It actually kind of boggles my mind that people are warning me to expect an up-tick in the last few days. It's done so well already it's honestly hard to imagine that there are supporters out there who might still be thinking of donating. o.o

I have seen this on a bunch of Kickstarters. People get excited about large numbers and they want to help them get higher. It's like an arcade game. Also, you always get a bunch of people who were putting off the decision, and some of those people decide to donate. Those are the people who want your reminders.
