There’s a “World of Princesses” at the Ambassador Theatre here in Dublin. I realize it’s probably ridiculous, but every time I see it I get pissed off. “For every girl who’s ever wanted to be a princess,” it says, and yes, okay, fair enough, I too wanted to be a princess at times. But it still just annoys the crap out of me, because every time I ( Read more... )

even the heroine of the Princess Bride waffles between passivity and fatalism (as much as I absolutely adore that movie).

To be fair, Buttercup in the movie is actually a bit brighter than Buttercup in the book, who Goldman deliberately wrote as being not the brightest, er, buttercup, in the bunch. I have the vague belief Wesley wasn't actually all that smart either, but I could be wrong. :)

And when I see in a car window one of those signs which says 'Princess On Board', I get this awful urge to chuck a brick.

I have a handicap tag for my car, so I get to use what I call the "Princess Parking" spot at stores. Because I am speshul!

Actually, not only was the father of the Crown princess' child convicted of a drug charge, but she has publically admitted that she has used drugs herself. (Most of us like that she's so honest even if wedon't like what she has done. As long as it stays history, we won't complain. )

Our other princess...
Runs a school where she teaches the gullible to communicate with angels.
Not exactly popular with most of the public(and ridiculed in quite a few comics), but it also clashes with the Church.
(The Evangelical-Lutheran church we have doesn't say much about speaking TO angels, but getting answers... Not supposed to happen.)
Her husband, Ari Behn would have been considered a 'dandy' in earlier times, pranching about with a godawful goatee, writing and publishing boring writings.

Selling the fantasy, not the reality. Even if you ignore briefly the idea that setting those expectations with little girls only leads to psychological barriers and emotional issues in adulthood, even the sincere desire that all little girls could grow up into a real-life version of the fantasy doesn't do them any favors.
