, in comments wrt to Eddings’ death, said, And I can never forget Jim’s speech about the origins of the Codex Alera books: “Because all epic fantasy begins with an orphan on a farm.” Eddings is who I always associated with that.

Which is true, and which makes me feel rather sentimental, and also makes me want to write an orphan-on-the-farm epic ( Read more... )

He is for all intents and purposes a norphan! You must be writing Epic Fantasy!

(Well, duh.)

I'm only halfway through TPC, and I'm still hoping to see more than one volume from this series. *starts up Epic-Hopeful-Look 3.145!*

Even though the prologue did throw me for a loop, crossed my fingers and started on the mantra "She wouldn't toss chloridians or Highlander 2 at us...I just know she wouldn't!"

Belinda reminds me somewhat of Alisha from the Phoenix Law, but either way -- we could definitely stand to see some more epic intrigue on the fantasy shelves!

I always want to switch things up with that orphan on a farm thing. I mean, Garion and Rand are cool and all but I would have liked it they were, perhaps, a little less whiny. It would be nice to take all of those fantasy tropes and mix them up some.

Hmm...interesting. I alway thought Butcher's "orphan on a farm" comment was in reference to Star Wars...

I recognize that it's a long cherished trope, but Luke was the first orphan on a farm I thought of when I read that.
...And then, Taran of Caer Dalben.

I guess that's why the comment is so apropo -- there are a LOT of orphans on farms whose lives turn into an epic story. ;)
