just doin’ the job

So I got revision notes on THE PRETENDER’S CROWN from my agent, the estimable arcaedia/Jennifer Jackson a couple of days ago. The first screen (which was all I read at the time) wasn’t too terrible (I have gotten *really* gun-shy about revision letters since the one that obliged me to *completely* rewrite HOUSE OF CARDS), so today I held my breath and ( Read more... )

writing, this job doesn't suck, editing, the pretender's crown

Days like today, this job doesn’t suck. Yay!

I had to laugh out loud when I read that because you know a number of us who've yet to have a novel published look at you absolutely chartreuse with envy! Grass is greener, etc.

As for the revisions, yeah, my stomach twinges when I get feedback, but when you have someone who actually knows how to edit without changing the flavor of the work (as your agent sounds), isn't it marvelous? I can't wait to see the end result. And cheers for feeling "zingier" about writing. :)

*laughs* Yeah, I know, but in some ways it's a job like any other, and on some days you just don't wanna do it. :) Mind you, it's hands down the *best* job I've ever had... :)

Oh, sure. All jobs are unappealing at some time. Why, I'm certain that sometime Maggie Gyllenhaal went, "Wow, I don't feel like going to work today, even if it's kissing Christian Bale or Aaron Eckhart..."

Of course, if she did ever feel that way, we should be able to hit her in the face with a pie.

By the way, thanks for letting me latch onto your journal. Reading about the thoughts of a successful writer helps spur my interest in writing too. :)

...it's a little hard to imagine not wanting to go to work on a day when you got to kiss Christian Bale... and I am *all* for the pie scenario! :)

You're quite welcome. I started this a bazillion years ago because people I hadn't seen in months would say, "What've you been up to?" and I'd be all, "Um, I donno, not much," and with a journal I could just tell them to read it if they really wanted to know. :) But then I went the publication/full-time writer route, and part of the point of having a presence like this one is to hopefully let people know what it's like. :)

Did you read what she said about it when she first got it?

Captain Agent: Weekend reading pile, ahoy. There she blows off the starboard bow.
First Mate: Captain, the monster from the deep! She's huge! Man the life boats!
Captain Agent: That's just C.E. Murphy's next book.... it can be tamed -- it's only 711 pages. Buck up, man. Disclaimer: This is not to advocate giant manuscripts. Rampant wordcount can be a problem. Think about what each scene does. Save a tree.

You two are perfect for each other. :D

*laughs* Yeah, I'd read that, and thought it was very funny. :)
